Buffalo Bills Stun Fans With New Veteran Safety Signing

The Buffalo Bills strategically enhance their secondary with the signing of versatile veteran CJ Gardner-Johnson, addressing key departures and strengthening their defensive lineup.

The Buffalo Bills are making a strategic move to bolster their secondary by reportedly signing veteran safety CJ Gardner-Johnson on a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. This signing addresses a crucial need following the departures of key players like Taylor Rapp, Jordan Poyer, Damar Hamlin, and Cam Lewis. With only Cole Bishop and Jordan Hancock, a fifth-round pick from 2025, returning with experience, the Bills were expected to seek veteran presence and possibly utilize draft picks to strengthen this area.

Gardner-Johnson, at 28, brings a wealth of versatility to the Bills’ defense. Known for his adaptability, he has played various roles including box safety, slot corner, free safety, and even some boundary corner snaps. His stint with the Bears showcased his ability to contribute as a pass rusher from the edge, highlighting his multifaceted skill set.

Since being drafted by the Saints in 2019, Gardner-Johnson has journeyed through the league, making stops with the Eagles, Lions, and most recently with the Bears and Texans. His time with Philadelphia was particularly notable, as he helped the team reach the Super Bowl twice, earning a victory against the Chiefs after the 2024 season.

Originally starting his career as a cornerback from the University of Florida, Gardner-Johnson transitioned to safety during his first tenure with the Eagles. In 2024, he excelled as a starting free safety, playing 805 snaps and tying his career-high with six interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Over his career, he has amassed 20 interceptions in 87 regular-season games.

Last year in Houston, Gardner-Johnson faced a setback with a knee injury during training camp. Although he returned for the regular season, he played only three games before being released by the Texans, a decision he publicly criticized.

He later joined the Ravens' practice squad but didn’t see game action. Eventually, he found a spot with the Bears, starting seven of the 10 games he played, including one playoff game.

Despite missing the first playoff game against Green Bay due to a concussion, he made significant contributions with 51 tackles, three sacks, and a forced fumble.

Gardner-Johnson’s addition to the Bills is not just about filling a roster spot; it’s about adding a dynamic, experienced playmaker who can adapt to various defensive roles. His presence promises to bring depth and flexibility to a secondary looking to rebound and strengthen for the upcoming season.
