5 Areas the Buffalo Bills Must Address This Offseason
As the NFL Combine approaches, the Buffalo Bills are gearing up to evaluate potential draft picks under the watchful eyes of General Manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Joe Brady. With several key positions needing reinforcement, the Bills are set for a critical offseason.
1. Wide Receiver
The departure of Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in 2024 left a void in the Bills' receiving corps. While the "Everybody Eats" strategy initially showed promise, it became apparent that the lack of a true No. 1 receiver allowed defenses to focus on limiting deep threats.
Khalil Shakir emerged as the leading receiver with 719 yards, but he was the only one to surpass 500 yards, with tight end Dalton Kincaid being the next closest. Adding a top-tier receiver in the draft could provide Josh Allen with the reliable target he needs.
2. Interior Offensive Linemen
The offensive line has been a stable unit for the Bills, but potential losses of Connor McGovern and David Edwards to free agency could disrupt that continuity. While Sedrick Van Pran-Granger and Alec Anderson are internal candidates to step up, the Bills would benefit from drafting additional guards and a center to ensure depth and maintain the line's effectiveness.
3. Linebacker
With a shift to a 3-4 defensive scheme under new coordinator Jim Leonhard, the linebacker position becomes crucial. Dorian Williams and Terrel Bernard are the expected starters, but with the possible departures of veterans like Matt Milano and Shaq Thompson, depth is a concern. Drafting linebackers will be essential to bolster the squad, especially given Williams' limited starting experience and Bernard's injury history.
4. Edge Rusher
The transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense necessitates re-evaluation of the edge rusher role. Historically, this position has been a weak spot for the Bills, lacking the ability to secure critical sacks.
Retaining players like Bosa and A.J. Epenesa could provide stability, but drafting an edge rusher remains a priority to enhance the pass rush.
5. Cornerback
In today's pass-heavy NFL, the importance of having a deep pool of cornerbacks can't be overstated. Despite the resurgence of running plays, the need for ballhawking corners in a 3-4 defense is vital. While re-signing Tre White is an option, the draft offers opportunities to find hidden gems in later rounds, much like Christian Benford.
As the Bills prepare for the draft, addressing these key areas will be crucial for their success in the upcoming season. With strategic picks and smart signings, Buffalo aims to strengthen its roster and make a deep playoff run.
