DeMeco Ryans used a charity night in Houston to send a clear message before the season starts: the Texans are done talking.
Speaking Thursday at the team’s annual Season Premiere event at the Houston Methodist Training Center, Ryans told the room he likes what he has, but wants the Texans to back it up when Buffalo comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 13.
“I’m proud of the group we have. I think we have a really strong team this year.
Now, it’s time for us to stop all the talking and go show people what we’re all about. So I’m excited for kickoff vs.
Buffalo next week.”
The event was presented as a 25th-season fundraiser for the Houston Texans Foundation, with the team listing a 6 p.m. start, a red-carpet entrance and chairs that included Hannah McNair and Jamila Ryans. KPRC 2 Texans reporter Aaron Wilson was on site and posted Ryans’ remarks from the room.
For Ryans, the backdrop matters because this is Year 4 of his run as Houston’s head coach, and the results already stack up as the best the franchise has seen. He has a 32-19 regular-season record, with at least 10 wins in each of his first three seasons, according to Football Database.
In the postseason, he is 3-3. Houston has won a wild-card game each year under Ryans and then lost in the AFC Divisional Round - to Baltimore in 2023, Kansas City in 2024 and New England in 2025.
The Texans still have never made it to an AFC Championship Game. Pro-Football-Reference lists Houston as 0-7 all-time in the divisional round.
Last season showed how high the floor has gotten, even if the ceiling still hasn’t moved. Houston finished 12-5 and reached the playoffs for a third straight year, which The Associated Press reported in December was a franchise first.
The Jaguars won the division at 13-4. Houston entered as the AFC’s No. 5 seed, beat Pittsburgh 30-6 on the road in the wild-card round, then lost 28-16 at New England.
A fourth straight playoff appearance in 2026 would set another franchise first. Houston has never stretched a postseason streak beyond three years.
The defense is the reason the Texans keep getting mentioned among the league’s better teams. In 2025, Houston allowed 277.2 yards per game, the fewest in the NFL, and 17.4 points per game, second-best in the league, according to the Houston Chronicle’s end-of-season defensive review. Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr. both earned first-team All-Pro honors.
That’s why the Texans can be part of the Super Bowl conversation without it sounding forced. But Ryans’ Thursday message also pointed to the other side of the ball, the one that has to turn that kind of defense into something bigger.
Buffalo is not offering an easy opening test. The Bills also went 12-5 last season and made the playoffs.
The game is set for 1 p.m. ET, noon CT, on CBS.
The Texans’ official schedule and the NFL.com team schedule both list it that way.
The club also noted in May that this will be only the second season-opening meeting with Buffalo in franchise history, and the first since 2005.
Thursday night wasn’t all football talk, either. KHOU 11 aired Ryans discussing the team’s Rivalries uniforms, saying his Houston-born wife had to explain what “Houston blue” means to the city, and that his kids were already excited about the gear.
It was another reminder that Ryans is not just coaching in Houston. He’s rooted there.
Now the conversation shifts from a charity event and a microphone to Josh Allen, Buffalo and a Week 1 test that will say plenty about where this Texans team really stands.
