Brandon Beane is working the phones, and the Bills’ search seems to be pointed at the same part of the roster from multiple directions: the secondary.
With the 2026 NFL trade deadline set for Tuesday, November 10 at 4 p.m. ET, Buffalo has been linked to help at both cornerback and safety, according to two NFL insiders. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and Jonathan Jones of The Athletic have both reported that the Bills are exploring defensive backfield upgrades.
Breer addressed the Bills’ interest directly on X after a fan pointed out that his latest trade column did not mention Buffalo. He wrote:
“I had it in my last trade column, and will add it here-The Bills are still looking in to adding a piece on the defensive side of the ball. And specifically at corner and safety. https://t.co/CkjvAiQRLa”
Jones echoed that same theme in his latest piece for The Athletic, saying Buffalo is shopping for defensive help, with a particular eye on the back end.
“The Bills are in the market, or at least dabbling in the market, for defensive help,” Jones wrote. “I think, specifically, Buffalo would like to add to the defensive backfield.
The Bills have made calls on safeties and cornerbacks. The Bills parted ways with C.J.
Gardner-Johnson this week, but they were already sniffing around before that transaction.”
Jones also added, “I would say I believe: Jonathan Taylor will be on a different team next week, the Kansas City Chiefs will have a new wide receiver, and the Buffalo Bills will have some defensive help.”
Of the two spots, safety looks like the bigger need. Gardner-Johnson was already struggling before his release, and while Damar Hamlin provides useful depth, the Bills would probably prefer not to lean on him as a starter in big games. Adding someone to line up next to Cole Bishop would give Buffalo a much steadier look, and names such as Budda Baker, Cam Bynum, Amani Hooker and Nick Cross are mentioned as possible options.
Cornerback would be more about shoring up depth than landing a headline-grabber. Buffalo already has Christian Benford and Davison Igbinosun as its starters, but the room behind them is thin.
Tre’Davious White is expected to get a chance to help in that role soon, yet the rest of the depth chart remains unsettled. Maxwell Hairston, in his second season, has not played well, and there’s a real question about whether Buffalo trusts him to hold up if injuries hit.
The Bills could still decide Hairston is worth developing further in Jim Leonhard’s defense, but a player-for-player swap would at least make a cornerback addition easier to sell to fans if one comes together before the deadline.

Bills Move On From C.J. Gardner-Johnson As Secondary Questions Grow
The Bills have moved on from safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson after the end of his one-game suspension, a decision that came as Buffalo continued sorting through its defensive backfield following the Baltimore game. Head coach Joe Brady said the call was a difficult one because of Gardner-Johnsons edge and personality, but the team ultimately chose to make a change based on what it needed moving forward.
For Buffalo, the timing adds another layer to a secondary that has already been under the microscope, with Damar Hamlin and Geno Stone among the options to help fill the opening. It leaves the Bills trying to stabilize a key part of the defense while also figuring out how best to replace a player whose presence brought a different kind of energy to the room. [Read more 🡒]
Bills Trade Search Just Put Another Intriguing Safety In Play
The Bills search for help on defense has brought another safety into the conversation, with Washingtons Nick Cross emerging as a name worth watching before the November 10 trade deadline. Cross signed a two-year contract with the Commanders in March 2026 and has carved out a versatile role in their defense this season, which is exactly the kind of flexibility Buffalo tends to value when it starts weighing midseason additions.
Cross also has already worked his way back from the injury he suffered in Week 2, adding another layer to his appeal for a team looking at both present help and long-term fit. The question now is whether the Bills decide the combination of role, availability and cost is worth pursuing, especially with any trade coming with both financial implications and draft-pick considerations attached. Bills Suddenly Have A Bad Timing Problem Before Vikings Game
The Bills offensive line entered the week with an unwelcome dose of uncertainty ahead of a Week 9 matchup with Minnesota, a defense that has made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks with its pressure and blitz looks. Buffalo is already trying to sort through protection issues against a Vikings front that can force offenses out of rhythm, and the timing of the injury report only adds to the concern.
Dion Dawkins and Alec Anderson were both held out of practice, while Spencer Brown was limited as the group dealt with injuries at a spot where continuity matters. For a Bills offense that wants to stay on schedule, the health of the line is suddenly one of the biggest subplots heading into Sunday. [Read more 🡒]
