Bills Suddenly Face A Scary Question About Key New Defender

Pro Bowl safety CJ Gardner-Johnson's promising start with the Buffalo Bills takes a concerning turn as he faces an uncertain recovery from a training camp injury.

Buffalo Bills safety CJ Gardner-Johnson is in the middle of emergency testing after suffering a lower right leg injury during practice on Saturday, a worrying turn in his first training camp with his new team.

Gardner-Johnson, an eight-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2024 season, signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Buffalo in March. He was only just getting started with his first camp alongside his Bills teammates when the injury happened.

The sequence unfolded about an hour into practice. Gardner-Johnson went to both knees after defending a pass during team drills, and the play appeared to be non-contact. A trainer immediately checked the back of his right foot, focusing on the Achilles area.

Speculation spread quickly on social media about the injury, with many fearing an Achilles tear. Video showing him walking shortly afterward eased some of those concerns, but the exact nature of the injury still isn’t clear.

He was initially unable to put any weight on his right leg when helped up, then managed a few steps before being escorted to the medical tent. Not long after that, he was carted to the locker room.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane did not have an immediate update after practice, saying: 'Until we get an MRI, we´ll see.'

Gardner-Johnson was brought in as one of Buffalo’s major offseason additions and was expected to compete for a starting role in a reworked defense under new coordinator Jim Leonhard. His aggressive style and hard-hitting game were viewed as a strong match for Leonhard’s attacking approach, and he had already made a quick impression as a vocal presence in the secondary.

The injury comes during a career that has taken Gardner-Johnson to his seventh NFL team. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2019, spent three seasons there, then moved to Philadelphia for his first stint with the Eagles. He also played three games for the Lions in 2023 before returning to Philadelphia for the best season of his career so far.

In March 2025, he was traded to the Texans but was released after just three games. He later joined the Ravens’ practice squad, then landed in Chicago and played 10 games for the Bears last season before arriving in Buffalo for 2026. He turned 28 in December.

Bills Secondary Suddenly Has A C.J. Gardner-Johnson Concern

The Bills secondary had already been a point of interest this offseason with C.J. Gardner-Johnson joining the team on a one-year deal, bringing the kind of versatility and edge Buffalo hoped would sharpen the back end of its defense. But his recent exit from a game quickly shifted the conversation from fit and role to simple availability, as trainers and teammates surrounded him after he went down.

Gardner-Johnson was unable to continue and was carted off after an apparent issue with his right foot, leaving Buffalo with an uneasy wait on a player it had just added to help stabilize the secondary. For a defense that is still sorting out new pieces, the sight of a veteran defensive back going down like that is the sort of development the Bills can ill afford this early. [Read more 🡒]

Bills Suddenly Face A C.J. Gardner-Johnson Camp Concern

The Bills got a scare at training camp when safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson went down during a practice drill and had to be helped off the field. It was the kind of moment that can stop a camp session in its tracks, especially when a veteran defensive back is involved, and Buffalo immediately shifted into the cautious mode teams usually reserve for injuries that could alter the shape of a roster conversation.

For now, the early signs are at least somewhat encouraging, with teammates and staff indicating Gardner-Johnson was able to walk afterward and is going through the usual medical steps. Still, the club is waiting for more clarity before saying much more, and the next update will matter for a defense that has been counting on him to settle in quickly during camp. [Read more 🡒]

Bills Secondary Just Got A Scare It Could Not Afford

Training camp already has a way of sorting out the hopeful from the fragile, and Buffalo got a reminder of that when safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson went down during 11-on-11 drills. He suffered a lower-body injury, was helped off the field, and the Bills quickly shifted from practice mode to waiting mode as he was taken in for further evaluation.

The immediate concern was hard to miss: Gardner-Johnson was favoring his right foot and not putting much weight on it before heading to the locker room. Buffalo is now waiting on medical testing to learn how serious the injury is, a situation the secondary can hardly welcome with the season work already underway. [Read more 🡒]
