As Buffalo turns the page to a new era under first-year head coach Joe Brady, one of the more interesting battles on the roster is already taking shape on the offensive line. Guard Alec Anderson enters the season as the favorite to start at left guard, but his grip on the job is anything but secure.
Anderson re-signed with the Bills on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million, and the opening at left guard appeared to be his after David Edwards left for New Orleans. Even so, the spot is far from locked down. In Buffalo, this looks more like a penciled-in assignment than a permanent one.
The 27-year-old former undrafted free agent has built a useful role over four seasons with the Bills, logging valuable snaps along the way. This year gives him his best chance yet to turn that into a full-time starting job, but he won’t be handed anything.
The biggest challenge comes from Austin Corbett, who joined Buffalo in March on a one-year, $1.4 million contract. The Bills brought him in as line depth, but Corbett is clearly aiming higher than that. He has more than 90 NFL games on his résumé and started for the 2021 Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams.
There are other names in the mix too. Nick Broeker, a 2023 seventh-round pick, and Ar'maj Reed-Adams, a 2026 seventh-round pick, will both be trying to earn roster spots. Neither is projected to push for the starting job this season, but training camp could still bring a few surprises as the competition opens up.
For Anderson, the message is simple: keep the job by proving he belongs in a guard room that has become one of the most dependable in the NFL.
