Josh Allen Tweaks Foot in Loss to Browns, Says “We’re Good” - But Bills Offense Tells a Different Story
With just over a minute to go before halftime in Sunday’s matchup against the Browns, the Buffalo Bills' franchise centerpiece, Josh Allen, took a hit that had Bills fans everywhere holding their breath. On what looked like a broken play turned scramble drill, Allen tried to make something happen with his legs - but instead, he lost his balance and went down hard for a 22-yard sack.
The sack itself was brutal, but it was what came next that raised alarms. Allen stayed down momentarily, visibly adjusting his right foot and grimacing.
When he got back up, it wasn’t with the same bounce we’re used to seeing from the reigning NFL MVP. He limped noticeably around the end zone before heading back to the sideline, and shortly after, straight to the locker room.
Turns out, Allen was headed in early for X-rays on that right foot. The good news?
The scans came back negative. The better news?
He returned to the field after halftime. But the reality?
He didn’t quite look like himself the rest of the way.
Allen finished the game 12-of-19 for 130 passing yards and just 17 on the ground - a far cry from the dual-threat dynamo who’s been carrying the Bills offense all season. Buffalo managed only three points in the entire second half, and the rhythm that usually defines this unit just wasn’t there.
After the game, Allen downplayed the injury.
“I just tweaked my foot a little bit,” he said. “Just flamed up on me a little bit; pain subsided. So, we’re good.”
When asked if the foot impacted his play in the second half, Allen didn’t think so. But it’s hard to ignore the drop in production and the lack of mobility from a quarterback who usually thrives outside the pocket.
Head coach Sean McDermott didn’t have much to add on the medical front, saying he hadn’t yet received a full update from head trainer Nate Breske.
“Josh seems like he’s in good spirits in there,” McDermott said. “We’ll see as we go. I’m sure they’ll have further evaluations that they’ll get to me.”
The Bills, now 11-4, are still very much in the thick of the AFC East race with two games left on the slate. A playoff berth is all but locked in. But if Buffalo plans to make a serious run in January, they’ll need Allen not just available - they’ll need him at full strength.
This week’s practices will be telling. Allen’s foot will be one of the most closely watched storylines in Orchard Park, with a more official update expected when McDermott meets with the media Monday.
For now, the Bills - and their fans - are hoping this was just a scare, not a setback. Because if Allen isn’t 100%, Buffalo’s postseason ceiling starts to look a lot lower.
