Maxwell Hairston’s rise as Buffalo’s starting cornerback hit a hard reset after four games, but Tre’Davious White isn’t treating it like a dead end.
Hairston’s 2026 season has taken a rough turn. The second-year corner lasted only four starts before the Buffalo Bills’ 29-26 loss to the New England Patriots, when he gave up two touchdowns to Romeo Doubs.
That outing pushed defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard to move rookie Davison Igbinosun ahead of Hairston in Week 5, and since then the snaps have dried up. On the Bills’ West Coast swing, Hairston logged just 43 total snaps across the two games.
White, who signed to the practice squad on October 19, said Wednesday that the answer for Hairston is simple: stay steady.
“Just be yourself. Just have confidence,” White told the media. “Don’t ever lose confidence in yourself and (know) you’re here for a reason.”
White also made it clear he’s not just offering empty encouragement. He said he plans to help Hairston work through the setback.
“This guy has so much potential, so much upside,” White added. “I’m here to help, like I said.
When I wasn’t here, I was texting. We were texting back and forth throughout the summer and throughout earlier in the season.
So he knows how I feel about him. I’m always here for him.
He knows that... Like I told him, I’ve been benched before.
I’ve been on that other side, so you’re like not the first cornerback this has happened to. This is not going to be the end of the line for you either.
You’re always one play away. This team is going to ultimately need you.”
White’s role could still grow from here, too. Beyond helping Hairston, he could eventually earn a spot on the main roster as Buffalo tries to shore up a secondary that has been hit hard through the first six games. The Bills are giving up 285.8 passing yards per game, which ranks 31st in the league, and they’re near the bottom in passing touchdowns allowed with 15.

Bills Trade Buzz Keeps Coming Back To One Defensive Need
As the AFC leaders head into Week 8, the trade chatter around Buffalo keeps circling back to the same area of need on defense. The Bills have been mentioned among the teams that could look for help before the deadline, and the fit being floated from Arizona is a familiar one for a roster trying to sharpen itself for the stretch run.
Budda Baker is the name that keeps surfacing in that conversation, which makes sense given the value of a proven safety on a contender. With the speculation centered on teams trying to solve issues before they become bigger problems, Buffalos interest in secondary help is part of a broader market that could get active quickly if the right player becomes available. Bills Still Have One Big Availability Concern Coming Out Of The Bye
The Bills came out of their bye week and back onto the practice field with the usual midseason injury watch list, but one absence stood out more than the rest. Several players were either limited or held out as Buffalo began preparing for the next stretch, including Spencer Brown, who was still sidelined with a back issue.
Browns status matters because Buffalo is trying to get its footing again while also peeking ahead to a tough matchup with Baltimore. The Ravens had their own encouraging update when Lamar Jackson returned to practice after a high ankle sprain and is expected to play, which only adds to the importance of the Bills getting healthier at a time when the roster is still sorting through who can actually handle a full workload. Bills Secondary Suddenly Faces A Pressure Test Without C.J. Gardner-Johnson
The Bills secondary will have a different look coming out of the bye week, and not by choice. Buffalo has spent the break trying to clean up communication and build confidence in coverage, with coach Jim Leonhard stressing those areas after a stretch in which the unit has needed more stability from the back end. C.J. Gardner-Johnsons uneven play has been part of that conversation, especially with his struggles in coverage and tackling drawing scrutiny as the Bills prepare for a tougher test.
Now the focus shifts to how Buffalo fills the void against Baltimore. With Gardner-Johnson unavailable, the Bills have to sort out the back end quickly and keep the defense from losing rhythm in a matchup that can punish even small breakdowns. Damar Hamlin is the likeliest answer in the lineup, and the Bills will need him to fit smoothly alongside Cole Bishop if they want the secondary to hold up under pressure. [Read more 🡒]
