The Bills left Houston with a 36-31 win to open the 2026 season, and the story of the day was pretty clear: Buffalo’s offense carried the load while the defense spent most of the afternoon trying to keep up. It was a high-scoring surprise, a much-needed victory for a team plenty of people were doubting, and a strong opening to the Joe Brady era against a Texans team that has given Buffalo problems in recent memory.
Josh Allen led the way in the first road win in Houston for the Bills since 2006, and it was also his first career win there. He piled up 334 yards and four total touchdowns, doing enough to put Buffalo in position to survive a game that never really settled down.
A big part of that offensive surge came from DJ Moore, who looked like the No. 1 receiver Buffalo has been searching for since 2024. His connection with Allen clicked immediately.
Moore finished with 5 catches for 100 yards and added a 43-yard touchdown grab that helped stretch the Bills’ lead to ten late in the first half. Against a strong Texans defense, that kind of debut-like impact mattered.
Dalton Kincaid was right there with him as one of the day’s biggest bright spots. When he’s healthy, he can change the shape of the offense, and Sunday was the kind of outing Bills fans have been waiting for.
Kincaid caught 5 passes for 130 yards, including a 35-yard grab with less than two minutes left that set Buffalo up in scoring range. After dealing with a knee injury over the last two seasons, he looked fully capable of being a major factor.
Tyler Bass also gave Buffalo exactly what it needed. After missing all of last season, he opened this year by going 3-for-3 on extra points and 3-for-3 on field goals, with makes from 46, 34, and 33 yards. That’s the sort of clean start that can go a long way toward rebuilding trust.
Not everything was clean, though. The Bills were flagged 10 times for 85 yards, and four of the five starting offensive linemen were penalized.
Spencer Brown was the only starter on the line who didn’t draw one. Buffalo has leaned too often into careless mistakes, and this was another reminder that the discipline piece still needs work.
The linebacker battle also took a turn. Dorian Williams moved ahead of Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the competition, finishing second on the team in tackles behind Terrel Bernard and showing up with some solid run-stopping hits at or behind the line. It was enough to give Williams the edge for now, even if the spot could still shift week to week.
On defense overall, the Bills had a rough day. Christian Benford struggled in coverage against Nico Collins, who finished with 7 catches for 75 yards and a score, with Benford in the area for most of those plays.
It was a difficult matchup from start to finish, and one of the toughest outings fans can remember from Benford. Buffalo will need him sharper on Thursday night against the Detroit Lions.
The larger problem is that the defense as a whole never really found its footing. Jim Leonhard’s first game as defensive coordinator was rocky, and the Texans, an offense that isn’t usually known for putting up huge numbers, moved the ball too easily for too much of the game. The Bills did make some key plays when they had to, but there were too many third-down conversions allowed and too many stretches of sloppy football.
Still, Buffalo has the win, and that matters. The offense was explosive, the new pieces made an immediate impact, and Allen finally got a Houston breakthrough. There’s plenty to fix, but the Bills start the season 1-0.
