Bills Move On From Chauncey Gardner-Johnson For A Telling Reason

Buffalo Bills shake up their defense by parting ways with Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, focusing on fortifying their roster amid a strong start to the season.

The Buffalo Bills made a notable defensive backfield move after their Week 8 bye, parting ways with Chauncey Gardner-Johnson after he had already served a one-game suspension for spitting.

Buffalo had just rolled past the Baltimore Ravens to improve to 6-1, but the roster shakeup came soon after, with the team releasing the former Super Bowl champion who won a title with the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, the suspension was not the main reason the Bills moved on. Wolfe reported, "Bills are releasing safety CJ Gardner-Johnson, per source," and added, "It was CJ's inconsistency in play that led to the release not as much the spitting incident that got him suspended."

Gardner-Johnson appeared in six games for Buffalo through eight weeks. He sat out Week 8 after being suspended for spitting on or toward a player in the Bills’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Still, Wolfe’s reporting made clear the Bills viewed the issue as bigger than that one incident. Buffalo decided the veteran defensive back’s week-to-week play was too uneven to keep him in the mix.

On the season, Gardner-Johnson finished with one interception, two passes defended, 26 total tackles, and a passer rating allowed of 85.2.

Those numbers were not disastrous, but the Bills were looking for steadier output. His play swung sharply from week to week: he allowed a 68.7 passer rating in Week 1 and a 19.2 rating in Week 3, then gave up a 92.4, 126.6, and 118.7 passer rating in the three weeks before Buffalo’s bye.

With some missed tackles mixed in and coverage that could vary from snap to snap, the Bills opted to move on and try to get more reliable production in the secondary.

Gardner-Johnson could still draw interest elsewhere this season. Buffalo, though, chose not to wait, and cut him before Week 9.

Bills Left The Ravens With A Quarterback Problem Getting Worse

The Bills left Baltimore with more than a win to sort through after the Ravens quarterback room took a hit during the game. Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley both went down with injuries, turning what had already been a difficult night into a looming personnel issue for a team that suddenly has to patch together its depth at the most important position.

Rookie Joe Fagnano had been in line to start the upcoming game, but Baltimore is still navigating the fallout from all the quarterback attrition. The Ravens also added Austin Reed to the practice squad as they try to stabilize the position, a sign of how quickly the situation has gone from inconvenient to urgent. [Read more 🡒]

Spencer Browns Back Issue Just Became A Real Bills Concern

Spencer Browns back has turned into a real storyline for Buffalo, and not just because the Bills need him on the field. The veteran offensive lineman said he has been dealing with enough pain to require a significant amount of medication approved by the NFL, a reminder of how much the front line is often asked to absorb without much public attention. For an offense that leans on stability up front, any lingering issue with one of its tackles is the kind of thing that can ripple beyond a single game.

Browns comments also add a sharper edge to the concern because this did not sound like a minor, short-lived annoyance. The Bills have every reason to monitor how he responds as the season moves forward, since protecting the quarterback and keeping the run game intact depend so much on the health of the line. Even when a player keeps going, there is a difference between playing through something and being able to hold up to it, and Buffalo now has to watch which side of that line Brown is on. Bills Secondary Battle Just Got Tougher Before Vikings Matchup

Buffalos defense has already shown it can rise to the occasion this season, turning in strong outings in Week 3 against the Chargers and again in Week 8 against the Ravens while limiting yards and creating turnovers. One of the more encouraging signs in Baltimore was the way Damar Hamlin handled the back end of the defense in place of suspended safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, giving the Bills a steady option when they needed one.

Now the picture gets a little more crowded as Gardner-Johnson comes back into the mix, and the Bills have a real decision to make at safety before facing the Vikings. Joe Brady is weighing how to line up the secondary moving forward, and the choice carries some weight for a unit that has found a rhythm but suddenly has to sort out roles again at a key spot.
