The Buffalo Bills moved on from C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday, and Joe Brady made it clear Thursday that the decision wasn’t a simple one.
Speaking with reporters for the first time since the release, the Bills coach said the team’s choice came after plenty of evaluation, not some snap judgment after the loss to Las Vegas. Brady said he valued what Gardner-Johnson brought to the locker room, even as the Bills decided to cut ties with the veteran defensive back a day after his one-game suspension ended.
“I have so much love for [C.J.],” Brady said. “I loved his edge and personality.
So that didn’t make the decision easy. But it opened a door for guys the other day and that was part of evaluation.
There was a lot to evaluate. We didn’t come out of the game post Vegas and say, ‘This is what we were going to do.’”
Brady also said the Bills had expected Gardner-Johnson to return, with the staff continuing to assess the situation after the Baltimore game before ultimately deciding to release him.
That stance was a little different from what Brady had said when the topic came up on Oct. 19. At that point, he downplayed any notion that Gardner-Johnson was on the way out.
“Look, C.J.’s a member of the Buffalo Bills,” Brady had said. “We brought him here for a reason, and we know that he knows that he has to play better. He knows he has to be better for this team.”
Gardner-Johnson’s exit followed the incident that led to his suspension. He was ejected late in the first half after spitting in the direction of Raiders tight end Brock Bowers during a post-whistle exchange.
The NFL handed down a one-game suspension without pay, and his appeal was denied. He then missed Buffalo’s 36-10 win over Baltimore in Week 8.
With Gardner-Johnson gone, the Bills’ immediate answer in the back end is Damar Hamlin. He started against Baltimore in Gardner-Johnson’s spot and finished with five tackles and a pass breakup. Hamlin has 29 career starts across six seasons.
Geno Stone is another option. Elevated from the practice squad for the Ravens game, he logged six tackles and a pass breakup while playing just 19 defensive snaps. He was sent back to the practice squad Monday, and he has two elevations left this season, giving Buffalo a way to use him on game day without using a roster spot.

Dion Dawkins and Alec Anderson both sat out practice, while Spencer Brown was limited as the Bills tried to sort through the early-week workload. Bills Face A Brutal Primetime Stretch With January Stakes
The second half of Buffalos season is about to get loud, and not just because of the spotlight. The Bills are headed into five primetime games against winning teams, a run that includes matchups with the Vikings, Chiefs, Packers, Bears and Broncos, with several of those games carrying real weight in the race for playoff positioning. For a team with January ambitions, this is the kind of stretch that can shape the whole conversation around the AFC.
What makes it even more interesting is the mix of stakes and familiarity built into the schedule. There are coaching ties, star power and a handful of opponents that have already established themselves as legitimate tests, which means Buffalo will spend a lot of the back half of the year under the leagues brightest lights. If the Bills are going to protect their place in the standings, this is the part of the calendar where every detail starts to matter. [Read more 🡒]
Bills Fans Have A Playoff Reason To Watch Baltimore Tonight
The ripple effect from Buffalos win over Baltimore is still being felt, and Bills fans have a fresh reason to keep an eye on the Ravens tonight. Baltimore has had to reshuffle its quarterback room after injuries in the loss to the Bills, leaving the offense in a far different spot than it was just a week ago and creating a new layer of intrigue for a team trying to stay afloat in the AFC race.
Now the Ravens have to navigate Thursday Night Football against Jacksonville with a patchwork plan under center, and the matchup is not exactly forgiving. The Jaguars bring enough pressure and overall strength to make life difficult even for a stable offense, which is why Baltimores quarterback depth is suddenly such a central storyline for anyone watching from Buffalos side of the ledger.
