A rookie guard may end up sitting at the center of Buffalo’s Week 1 plan.
The Houston Texans’ 2026 draft class has one player currently expected to start against the Bills, and that’s Keylan Rutledge. For Buffalo, that makes the first-year lineman a clear target.
Houston’s defense was a major reason the Texans beat the Bills last year, but this matchup looks different in a few important ways. Buffalo’s offensive line was banged up in that game, and several skill players were dealing with issues too.
This time, if Spencer Brown, Dion Dawkins, Keon Coleman, and Dalton Kincaid are healthy, the Bills should be in better shape to push their scoring output closer to normal. On the other side, if Buffalo can make life hard for Rutledge, it could also trim points off Houston’s total.
Rutledge’s tape shows why he’s getting the job, and why he’s also a rookie in every sense of the word. There are snaps where his base and hand placement look encouraging.
On one play, he gets his right hand to the shoulder, keeps his feet moving, and helps hold the block in place. On another, he shows good awareness in traffic and avoids getting tripped up, even if the defender eventually works free once he can accelerate.
But the rough edges show up fast. Rutledge can pop up too upright, and when his feet tighten underneath him, he becomes vulnerable to getting rocked.
His steps can get choppy, and there’s even a rep where he comes close to clicking his heels together. He can also get a little too eager, getting ahead of his defender and opening the door for the opponent to cut back into the lane he’s trying to seal.
In that sequence, he twists to recover, and it should have drawn a holding call.
There are also snaps where Rutledge looks like the player Houston wants to develop. He finds work, starts by helping his tackle, and reacts quickly when the linebacker shows up.
Still, the lack of a clean latch lets the defender slip away and rejoin the play. Then there’s the simple reality of rookie mistakes: one rep shows a dramatic change in body mechanics from the one before it, and another should have been flagged as a block in the back.
That’s the picture with Rutledge. The traits are there, and the Texans have reasons to be encouraged.
But the learning moments are there too, and they’re easy to spot. If Buffalo can capitalize on those mistakes, the Bills may have a path to turning last season’s result around.

The Bills have at least put a temporary pin in one of their quieter training camp competitions, naming Dee Alford as their primary punt returner on the first unofficial depth chart for the season opener against the Houston Texans. It is only a starting point, of course, but it gives Buffalo a clearer picture heading into Week 1 and puts Alford in position to handle a role that can swing field position in a hurry.
Ray Davis and Khalil Shakir are next in line on the depth chart, giving the Bills a couple of familiar options behind Alford as they sort out special teams roles for the opener. Buffalo also has veteran return specialist Greg Dortch on the practice squad, and his presence gives the team another possible answer if the need arises as the roster gets finalized for game day.
