The Bills are heading into their matchup against the Patriots a little shorthanded on defense - and it starts with two key names on the inactive list.
Cornerback Christian Benford and linebacker Terrel Bernard are officially out for Sunday’s game. Benford, who injured his toe during practice this week, was listed as questionable leading up to the game.
Bernard, meanwhile, will miss his third straight contest as he continues to recover from an elbow injury. That’s a tough blow for a Buffalo defense that leans heavily on Bernard’s versatility and leadership in the middle of the field.
But it’s not all bad news for the Bills. They’re getting a few important pieces back just in time.
Right tackle Spencer Brown, sidelined last week with a shoulder issue, is set to return to the starting lineup. His presence should bring some much-needed stability to the offensive line, especially in pass protection.
On the defensive side, edge rusher Joey Bosa is also back after missing time with a hamstring injury. Bosa’s return gives Buffalo’s pass rush a significant boost - exactly what you want heading into a divisional battle.
Offensively, wide receiver Joshua Palmer is active again after sitting out the past two games with an ankle injury. Palmer’s return adds another layer to the Bills' passing attack, giving Josh Allen another reliable target alongside Stefon Diggs.
One notable change: wide receiver Gabe Davis is a healthy scratch this week after suiting up for the last four games. It’s a surprising move, considering Davis has been a regular contributor, but it could signal a shift in how the Bills want to deploy their receiving corps heading into the final stretch of the season.
So while the Bills will be without a couple of defensive anchors, they’re also getting reinforcements in key spots. Against a Patriots team that’s struggled to find rhythm this year, Buffalo will be looking to capitalize - even if they’re not quite at full strength.
