Bills Linked To Big-Name Safety Buffalo May Not Want

Could the Buffalo Bills shake up their roster with a high-stakes trade for Chargers star Derwin James, despite his recent decline and hefty salary?

As the NFL trade deadline approaches, the Buffalo Bills are being tied to all kinds of possible moves, and one name that stands out is Chargers safety Derwin James.

James is 30 and has built a résumé that puts him among the most accomplished defensive backs of his era. He’s been a first-team All-Pro twice, after the 2018 and 2021 seasons, and a second-team All-Pro four times, following the 2018, 2022, 2024, and 2025 seasons. For a long stretch, he’s been considered one of the league’s premier strong safety and slot corner hybrids.

That reputation has to be weighed against what has happened early in 2026. James hasn’t played since Week 3’s loss in Orchard Park because of a hamstring issue, and his first three games suggested some decline.

He posted the highest missed tackle rate of his career at 16.7%, and passes thrown into his coverage area produced a 126.9 passer rating, the worst mark he’s allowed on those throws in any season as a pro. The Chargers’ 0-6 start hasn’t helped the picture either, with the whole defense struggling badly.

If Buffalo were to make a run at him, the fit would force some moving parts in the secondary. Cole Bishop has already spent nearly half of his snaps in the box and about a quarter at free safety, so James would likely require a shift in responsibilities and alignment. The most logical role for James in Buffalo would be as a more frequent slot defender, especially against bigger receivers or tight ends lined up inside.

The money side is just as important. James is due $11.5 million in 2026.

If Buffalo acquired him after Week 9, the Bills would be responsible for $5.75 million in prorated base salary. His 2027 salary is $17.5 million, fully guaranteed, and his 2028 number is set at $24.6 million.

As always with a trade, the acquiring team could negotiate a new deal, and that would probably be the path Buffalo would want to take if it brought him in.

There’s also the broader roster-building angle. Per Spotrac, the Bills have the fourth-lowest collective cap hit at safety in 2026. Next season, that figure ranks seventh-lowest in the league at $6.92 million, and Bishop will be in the final year of his rookie deal in 2027.

In trade value terms, Syndicate32.com’s trade machine points to a 2027 second-round pick as the likely price if the Chargers are truly in fire-sale mode. Even that feels steep given James’ age, his slow start, and the hamstring injury that has sidelined him.

And that’s where the skepticism comes in. James has been an elite player for a long time, and there’s no question he’s a special athlete with rare versatility.

But this doesn’t look like the cleanest match for Buffalo. Bishop already occupies that strong safety, blitzer, slot-defender role, and the Bills also have two young, physical safeties in Jalon Kilgore and second-year pro Jordan Hancock who could be ready for more snaps soon in a similar kind of usage.

If James were on an expiring deal, or if the financial commitment were much lighter, this would be easier to entertain. That isn’t the case here.

And as a reigning All-Pro, there’s little reason to think he’d want to tear up his Chargers contract and take a discount to land in Buffalo. That would be a hard ask for any player, and it’s easy to see why he’d turn it down.

Bills Keep Winning But One Concern Isnt Going Away

The Bills kept rolling in Las Vegas, outlasting the Raiders 33-30 in Week 6 to move to 5-1, and Josh Allen did his part with 255 passing yards and two touchdowns. It was the kind of road win that usually says plenty about a teams staying power, especially when it comes in a game that was tight all the way through.

Even so, the mood around Buffalo isnt exactly all-clear. The win helped keep the Bills near the top of the league picture, but the same lingering issue keeps surfacing after every victory: the defense still has to convince people it can be more than just a side note to Allens offense. Bills Suddenly Face A C.J. Gardner-Johnson Problem Before Tough Stretch

The Bills secondary is suddenly dealing with an unwelcome wrinkle as C.J. Gardner-Johnson sits at the center of an NFL discipline case heading into a pivotal part of the schedule. The league suspended the safety for one game without pay after determining he violated the sportsmanship rule during the game against Las Vegas, leaving Buffalo with an unexpected absence to navigate around after its Week 7 bye.

Unless an appeal changes the outcome, Gardner-Johnson is set to miss the Week 8 matchup with Baltimore, a game that already looms large for Buffalo. Coach Joe Brady said the team will not add any further punishment and expects Gardner-Johnson back in the lineup once he is eligible again, but for now the Bills have to prepare for a stretch that gets tougher with one of their defensive pieces unavailable. Bills Trade Deadline Could Hinge On One Proven Pass Rusher

Buffalos bye week arrives with the Bills sitting at 5-1 and the offense humming behind Josh Allen, but the other side of the ball still looks like the area most likely to shape the rest of the season. With the trade deadline approaching, the front office has a chance to decide whether to simply ride the current formula or go after a defender who can change the tenor of the pass rush.

One name that keeps surfacing is Colts defensive end DeForest Buckner, a proven interior threat who would fit the kind of upgrade Buffalo has been searching for. The fit makes sense on paper, and his contract situation only adds to the intrigue, which is why this is the kind of rumor worth watching as the Bills weigh how aggressive they want to be before the deadline.
