The Jets have taken a swing on Will Levis, and it’s the kind of move the Bills probably should have at least kicked around before the 2026 season.
Levis is heading to New York’s practice squad, according to Tom Pelissero, after going unclaimed when Tennessee waived him at the end of preseason roster cuts. The Titans were always headed toward a reset at quarterback after drafting Cam Ward in 2025, which made Levis the odd man out despite being a second-round pick just two years earlier.
The move gives the Jets a veteran quarterback on the practice squad and a chance for Levis to hit restart. He worked out with New York a few weeks ago, and now he’s set to spend at least this season in the AFC East.

From Buffalo’s perspective, this feels like a missed chance. It was only a practice squad spot, so there would have been no real downside for the Bills, especially with Shane Buechele already in the room. But Levis brings a different level of raw ability, and there’s a case that he simply has more talent to work with.
That talent showed up early in Tennessee. As a rookie starter, Levis threw for 1,808 yards with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
The hope was that a new coach in Brian Callahan in 2024 would unlock more. Instead, the opposite happened, and Levis looked more like a backup than a building block in that system.
By the time the Titans used the first pick in 2025 on Ward, Levis’ future in Tennessee was effectively sealed. He didn’t play at all last season, and now he’s out of Nashville entirely.
The Jets are an odd fit, but they’re the only team known to have shown interest, and Levis is now there. Still, for a quarterback in his situation, landing with a team that has a superstar starter usually makes more sense.
That’s why the Bills’ track record here stands out. They signed Mitch Trubisky in 2021 to back up Josh Allen after his time with the Bears, and Trubisky eventually moved on to Pittsburgh before returning to Buffalo.
Now he’s in Tennessee backing up Cam Ward.
Given Levis’ upside, it’s fair to wonder why Buffalo didn’t take the shot. Instead, the Jets did.
