Bills Just Got A Much Tougher Monday Night Problem

Aaron Donald's return adds a formidable boost to the Rams' defense as they gear up for their Monday night showdown against the Bills.

Aaron Donald will be back in the Rams’ lineup for Monday night’s showdown with the Bills, and that’s the kind of news Los Angeles needed before facing Josh Allen.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Saturday that Donald is set to play in Week 5 after sitting out last week’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles with a back injury. Donald got through Friday’s practice in full, which pointed in the right direction, and even though he did not practice Saturday, McVay said that would not keep him out Monday.

The return matters because Donald’s comeback has already had its share of twists. After spending more than two years away from professional football, the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year announced his retirement after the 2023 season, then shocked the league again in August by deciding to return to the Rams for the 2026 season.

He has had to work back into game shape along the way. Donald missed the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, then made his return against the New York Giants with three tackles, including one for a loss, across 33 defensive snaps.

The next week against the Denver Broncos, he posted one tackle and a quarterback hit before back soreness flared up and kept him out of practice the following week. That led to him being ruled out against Philadelphia, giving him extra time to recover.

Even without Donald, the Rams’ defense delivered one of its best outings of the year in a 24-20 win over the Eagles. Los Angeles erased a fourth-quarter deficit and got after Jalen Hurts, finishing with four sacks. Byron Young led the charge with 2½ sacks, while the rest of the front chipped in as well.

Still, Donald changes the equation. His presence on the interior gives the Rams another veteran weapon against a quarterback like Allen, who can make life miserable for defenses by extending plays and creating outside the pocket. Donald has not logged a sack yet during his return this season, but his reputation alone forces offenses to account for him.

That should matter for Young and the rest of the Rams’ front, too, because Donald’s ability to draw attention can open things up for everyone around him.

Los Angeles is also still waiting on another major defensive name. Myles Garrett remains on injured reserve after knee surgery following the season opener, and the two-time Defensive Player of the Year is not eligible to return until after Monday’s game. The Rams acquired Garrett during the offseason, but injuries have kept the pair from sharing the field early in the year.

For now, the Rams will settle for having Donald back as they try to build on the Philadelphia win and get above .500 for the first time this season. Buffalo comes in off a Week 4 loss to the New England Patriots, setting up a Monday night matchup with plenty on the line for both teams.

The Rams and Bills are scheduled to kick off Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN.

James Cook Could Be Central To Buffalos Bounce-Back Against The Rams

After a frustrating loss to New England, the Bills turn their attention to a Week 5 matchup with the Rams looking for a steadier offensive rhythm, and James Cook figures to remain right in the middle of it. He has been one of Buffalos most reliable pieces through the first month, piling up 421 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 70 carries while helping keep the offense from leaning too heavily in one direction.

Cooks recent stretch has only reinforced his value, with a score on the ground in each of the past three games. ESPN Fantasy sees him continuing in a featured role against Los Angeles, projecting a workload heavy enough to shape Buffalos approach if the Bills can get back on track and establish the run early. Bills Passing Game Suddenly Rests On Keon Coleman In Week 5

The Bills passing game has been forced to adjust for a couple of weeks now, and the next test could lean even more heavily on Keon Coleman. With the offense already navigating a receiver room that has had to reshuffle since early in the season, Coleman has been the one stepping into a larger role and producing enough in Weeks 2 and 4 to keep Buffalo moving through the air. Against the Rams, that growth matters even more because the Bills need someone besides their usual perimeter threats to create separation and keep the passing game balanced.

Colemans challenge is a familiar one for young receivers: keep building trust while drawing top defensive attention. The Rams have the kind of corner play that can make every target feel crowded, and Buffalos staff has reason to believe Coleman is ready for the assignment based on how he has handled his expanded opportunities so far. If the receiver situation breaks the wrong way, though, the Bills may have to ask even more of him than they planned when the week began. [Read more 🡒]

Joe Brady Has Bills Fans Hopeful And Uneasy For One Reason

Joe Bradys first month as the Bills head coach has offered enough to fuel optimism, and just enough uneven play to keep Buffalo fans a little on edge. After the team moved on from Sean McDermott and elevated Brady for the 2026 season, the early return has been a 3-1 start through four games, a sign that the transition has gone better than many around the league might have expected. Brady has also continued working closely with Josh Allen, with an emphasis on cutting down turnovers and smoothing out the offenses rougher stretches.

But the reason this feels unfinished is the same reason it feels promising: the Bills havent yet looked fully settled under their new leader, and the recent inconsistency has left room for questions about how sustainable this start really is. Allen remains the center of everything Buffalo wants to do, and Bradys ability to clean up the mistakes without stifling the quarterbacks aggressiveness will go a long way toward determining whether this early surge turns into something sturdier over the long haul.
