Bills Interview McDaniel as Coaching Search Takes an Interesting Turn

Former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has emerged as a serious candidate for the Bills' top job amid a busy interview circuit and a potential Chargers contingency plan.

The Buffalo Bills are taking a close look at Mike McDaniel as they search for their next head coach, interviewing the former Dolphins leader on Friday, according to reports.

McDaniel, who was let go by Miami earlier this month after four seasons at the helm, is one of the more intriguing names on the market. If he doesn’t land a head coaching gig this cycle, he’s reportedly lined up to become the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator - a role that would keep him in the mix on the offensive side of the ball, where he’s made his mark over the years.

During his run in Miami, McDaniel posted a 35-33 record and took the Dolphins to the playoffs twice. But the win-loss column only tells part of the story.

From 2022 to 2025, Miami’s offense ranked eighth in total yards and 12th in expected points added per play - a strong showing that reflects the kind of offensive structure and creativity McDaniel is known for. His system helped unlock explosive plays and maximize the talents of a fast, dynamic roster.

Before taking over in Miami, McDaniel spent five years with the San Francisco 49ers under Kyle Shanahan, including a stint as offensive coordinator in 2021. That experience in Shanahan’s system - widely respected for its run-game innovation and quarterback-friendly design - helped shape McDaniel’s offensive philosophy. It’s that background, and his proven ability to generate production, that makes him a compelling candidate for a team like Buffalo.

The Bills are coming off a major organizational shift, having fired head coach Sean McDermott on January 19. Since then, they’ve cast a wide net in their coaching search, interviewing Brian Daboll, Lou Anarumo, and Joe Brady, among others. Upcoming interviews are reportedly scheduled with Grant Udinski, Anthony Weaver, and Anthony Lynn - signaling that Buffalo is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to find the right voice for the locker room.

Whoever gets the job will be only the second head coach for quarterback Josh Allen since he entered the league in 2018 - a significant detail, given how central Allen is to the team’s identity and future. According to reports, Allen has been present for all of the Bills’ interviews so far, underscoring just how involved he is in the process. That kind of collaboration between franchise quarterback and front office speaks volumes about how Buffalo is approaching this next chapter.

For McDaniel, the opportunity in Buffalo would be a chance to work with one of the league’s premier quarterbacks and a roster that’s been knocking on the door of a Super Bowl for several seasons. Whether he gets the nod or heads west to the Chargers, McDaniel’s next move will be one to watch - and if his past work is any indication, he won’t be out of the spotlight for long.
