Western New York is already riding the wave of a Bills win, and the energy is spilling into classrooms, stores and game-day plans with Thursday’s home opener against the Detroit Lions now just days away.
The Bills started the season with a 36-31 victory over Houston on Sunday, and for fans across the region, that opener only added fuel to the buzz.
“Everybody’s pumped, the team is pumped, like, this is our year,” Bills fan Anthony Russo said.
“You know, never know how the season’s going to start, so definitely starting with a win I think just gets people a lot more amped up,” Bills fan Marsha Maredia said.
“I think this is a whole new era for the Buffalo Bills for sure,” Bills fan Kevin Patterson said.
That enthusiasm comes with a practical side, too. The home opener is set for an 8:15 p.m. kickoff at Highmark Stadium, and that late start has pushed some schools to adjust their schedules. Orchard Park schools, along with West Seneca and Frontier, will dismiss students early to help avoid traffic tied to the game.
“It’s fantastic, we went to West Seneca East … I wish they would’ve done that when we were kids,” Patterson said. “That’s one way to get the entire city into it.”
Fans are also getting ready in the most Bills way possible: by buying more gear. Tim Bauer said he picked up a new James Cook jersey, a new snapback hat, and even an old seat back from the old stadium.
“After that Bills game … I gotta get some new gear,” Bills fan Mark Maredia said.
That rush is already being felt at BFLO Store, where Marketing Director Nicholas Pieri said business has picked up with fans coming in from well outside the area.
“Kicks off the busy season; we got people coming in from all out of town, they want to experience Buffalo, the atmosphere, the new stadium, coming in for food, coming here for gear,” Pieri said. “Definitely seen a huge influx of Bills fans, it’s been super awesome.”
The store is marking the win with a Victory Monday sale, offering 17 percent off all Bills products after a Bills victory.
“Seventeen percent off all Bills products when the Bills win, so that will start immediately after a Bills win,” Pieri said. “We call it Victory Monday because that’s the generic term, but this week, we’re hoping for a Victory Friday because the Bills play on Thursday.”
