The Buffalo Bills have only so much time to sort out the ripple effect of bringing Phidarian Mathis back onto the active roster.
Mathis was added yesterday after serving a three-game suspension to open the season, and that move triggered a 48-hour window for Buffalo to make a corresponding transaction to remain under the NFL’s roster limit.
For Jim Leonhard’s defense, getting Mathis back is no small thing. The veteran defensive lineman is built for the kind of two-gapping approach Leonhard leans on, and that was the central point of the case made for him back in June.
His work at Alabama under Nick Saban showed exactly why he can matter in that role. As was noted in the scouting report from 2022: “ He really anchors well against double teams.
Grows roots and is not easily moved…two-gapping skill is next level.”
At 6’4”, 312 pounds, Mathis gives Buffalo a body that fits what Leonhard wants up front.
The question now is who comes off the roster to make room, and the answer appears to be moving away from the defensive line. A month ago, DeWayne Carter looked like the obvious candidate in a defensive tackle-for-defensive tackle swap.
That no longer feels realistic after Carter’s strong start through three weeks. He’s made himself too useful to cut loose.
Veteran Mike Danna also seems unlikely to be the odd man out. Buffalo turned to him at the last second after Ed Oliver suffered a freak hip injury in warmups before Week 2 against the Lions, and that kind of emergency value matters.
The most likely move, then, is placing rookie guard Ar’maj Reed-Adams on injured reserve. He has been inactive all three weeks and has also been dealing with an elbow injury. Reed-Adams was a seventh-round rookie who earned a roster spot because of his sturdy camp and preseason work, and he was a prospect the Bills clearly liked.
Even so, Buffalo is not short on interior line options. Lloyd Cushenberry is the backup center, while Austin Corbett can back up either guard spot. That gives the Bills enough cover to absorb the move without leaving themselves thin inside.
