Bills Get A Troubling Week 3 Test Despite Chargers' 0-2 Start

As the Los Angeles Chargers face the undefeated Buffalo Bills in Week 3, their struggles with turnovers and injuries, along with lingering locker room tensions, could impact their performance on the field.

The Buffalo Bills get the Los Angeles Chargers at the right time, because the Chargers are carrying plenty of baggage into Week 3.

Los Angeles is 0-2, and that start is a first for Jim Harbaugh at any level of his coaching career. The latest setback came at home against the Las Vegas Raiders, though SoFi Stadium hardly played like a Chargers home field with Raiders fans taking over and celebrating a 26-14 win.

One of the biggest problems for Los Angeles has been self-inflicted mistakes. Against the Raiders, the Chargers put the ball on the ground six times.

Justin Herbert accounted for three of those fumbles, and somehow the Chargers only lost one of the six. Herbert also threw two interceptions, making for a rough day all the way around.

The frustration didn’t stop there. At least one veteran sounded checked out after the game, and that veteran was Khalil Mack, the former UB football star. He said he blanked out during Harbaugh’s postgame speech.

“Honestly, I blanked out the whole time,” Mack said, via Kris Rhim. “I don’t really know. My mind was on the game still, but I feel like it had something to do with picking up the pieces and getting this thing right.”

Mack added that he thinks the Chargers are close to fixing things, but that quote says plenty about where the locker room is right now.

The injury situation is also getting uglier. Los Angeles lost five more players to injury on Sunday, adding to an already long list.

Two tight ends left the game: David Njoku was carted off with a knee injury, and Charlie Kolar exited with a forearm injury. Oronde Gadsden is now the only healthy tight end on the 53-man roster, while Evan Svoboda and Patrick Herbert, Justin Herbert’s brother, are on the practice squad.

Derwin James, Dalvin Tomlinson and Kayode Awosika also went down. James left with a pinky injury, Tomlinson with a hamstring injury and Awosika with a leg injury. James has already said he’ll be playing with a cast.

Buffalo also has to prepare for a new voice steering the Chargers’ offense. The playcaller is Mike McDaniel, former head coach of the Dolphins, and he knows Buffalo’s defensive personnel well. The Bills have a new system, but McDaniel still brings familiarity with specific players on that side of the ball.

Bills Just Lost Depth To A Rival And Now Face A Roster Decision

The Bills have lost a familiar depth piece to a division rival, with the Dolphins signing linebacker Andre Jones Jr. off Buffalos practice squad and adding him to their 53-man roster. Jones had been with the Bills for the last year and a half, and his value this season came from the versatility teams covet at the bottom of the roster, with appearances on both defense and special teams.

For Buffalo, the move leaves an open spot on the practice squad and puts the front office in position to move quickly. It is the kind of transaction that rarely makes headlines on its own, but for a team trying to preserve useful depth across a long season, losing a player to Miami adds a small layer of inconvenience and a reminder that even the practice squad can become a source of competition inside the division. Jim Leonhard Sounds Alarm On A Bills Issue Fans Can't Ignore

Through the first two games of the 2026 season, the Bills have banked a 2-0 start, but Jim Leonhard is not pretending the defense has been airtight. Buffalos defensive coordinator publicly labeled the unit boom or bust, a blunt assessment that fits the mixed results so far and puts the emphasis on what happens when the games tighten up, especially on third downs and in the red zone.

Leonhard did point to some encouraging signs, including the way Buffalo limited Jahmyr Gibbs on the ground against the Lions, but the bigger message was about consistency and emotional steadiness as the schedule gets tougher. For a defense that has shown it can flash, the challenge now is making those flashes last longer and arrive more often, because the early margin for error is already starting to shrink. Bills Have Another Reason To Feel Better About Patriots Matchup

Josh Allen has given Buffalo plenty to feel good about through the first two weeks, piling up 674 total yards and nine touchdowns without a turnover while steering the Bills to a 2-0 start. The offense has looked sharp, the quarterback has been in control, and the team has already put itself in a strong early position as it turns toward a stretch that includes a Week 3 visit from the Los Angeles Chargers.

The next matchup that really stands out, though, is Week 4 against New England, and the early contrast at quarterback only adds to the intrigue. While the Patriots have managed a win over Pittsburgh, Drake Maye has had his share of rough moments with decision-making and turnovers, which gives Buffalo another reason to like its spot when the AFC East rivals meet again.
