The Buffalo Bills are back at Highmark Stadium on Thursday night for their preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the playing surface is drawing just as much attention as the matchup itself.
That field took heat after the preseason opener against Carolina, when players complained about the footing and divots kept getting ripped up. The surface was only installed last October, so some settling was always part of the process, but Bills coach Joe Brady made it clear where his focus sits.
“I am way more concerned about the product that we're putting out on the field than the field conditions,” he said. “We've got enough things for us to kind of go through.
I've felt it through the preseason, we're going through a new stadium, operations, field, team. We're figuring it all out so we have to make sure that the product on the field is where it needs to be and everybody else will take care of it.”
Josh Allen won’t be on the field, and most of the starters on both teams are expected to sit out as well. Still, Allen was blunt about why he’s happy the Bills moved away from artificial turf.
“I think grass is healthier for our bodies,” he said. “I'm to a point in my career now that when we practice inside on the artificial (field), I can feel it the next day. I think any guy that was honest would tell you that's how they feel.
“I've gotten numerous burns on my legs from artificial turf, like to the point where I can't sleep at night because it's bubbling over. It's very painful. So I’m excited to not have to deal with that at home at least.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 27. The Bills and Steelers will be on CBS, with local coverage on WROC channel 8 in the Rochester area and WIVB channel 4 in the Buffalo area.
The game will also stream on CBS, and viewers can watch on NFL.com and the NFL mobile app. NFL+ is another option, though it can’t be cast to a TV and must be watched on a phone or tablet. Paramount+ and FUBO are also listed as streaming options, with FUBO offering a free trial for new subscribers.
On the broadcast team, Andrew Catalon will handle play-by-play, Steve Tasker will be the analyst, and Maddy Glab will report from the sideline.
Radio coverage will be available on SiriusXM channel 88 for the Bills feed and channel 380 for the Steelers feed, plus the Bills Radio Network. Chris Brown has the play-by-play, Eric Wood is the analyst, and Steve Tasker is the sideline reporter.

The Bills finished their preseason on a high note, slipping past the Steelers 28-27 in the finale on a last-gasp sequence that showed exactly why these August games still matter.
