The Buffalo Bills are riding into their matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders at 4-1 after a wild overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on “Monday Night Football,” but one of their biggest names is already dealing with a hit from the league office.
Bills running back James Cook was fined $21,167 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness involving the use of the helmet at 2:25 in the first quarter of Buffalo’s game against the Rams. The play drew no flag at the time, but after the league reviewed the footage, officials decided it crossed the line.
The fine is no small thing, either. It ranks as the second-largest penalty handed out in Week 5, behind only Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, who was fined $23,882 for unnecessary roughness involving the use of the helmet.
The NFL releases fines and punishments each week for rules violations from the previous weekend’s games. According to the league, “The league may respond to an official's call during a game or to a specific play that a team submits for review. The NFL Officiating Department also reviews every play from every game and refers potential violations to the Football Operations compliance team,”
Buffalo now turns its attention to Las Vegas, with the Raiders entering the game at 3-2. One of the key matchups in the spotlight will be the veteran quarterback duel between Josh Allen and Kirk Cousins.
The money collected from fines is donated to the and NFL Foundation.

Maxwell Hairston Faces A Defining Bills Moment In Week 6
Maxwell Hairstons rookie year has already taken a winding path for the Bills, beginning with a stint on injured reserve before he finally made his debut in Week 8. The 2025 first-round cornerback showed enough early promise to keep the conversation around his place in Buffalos future, but the margin for error at cornerback is never very large, especially for a player trying to carve out his role after missing valuable time.
The recent stretch has made the picture less comfortable. Hairston struggled in the loss to New England, where he was part of a defense that gave up two touchdown passes, and the Bills have since added more competition to the room with Davison Igbinosun in the mix. Buffalo has made it clear that the job will be earned, not assumed, and Hairston now finds himself in a spot where the next step matters as much as the first impression did. [Read more 🡒]
Alec Anderson Has Become A Bills Surprise Fans Cant Ignore
Buffalos 4-1 start has been built in part on the kind of stability that can go unnoticed until it becomes impossible to ignore, and Alec Anderson has fit that mold along the offensive line. With Josh Allen leading a productive offense, Anderson has settled in as a key piece up front, giving the Bills another dependable blocker in a group that has helped the quarterback stay comfortable and the attack stay on schedule.
For a team that has leaned on trench depth to keep its offense humming, Andersons rise has been one of the quieter success stories of the early season. He arrived without much fanfare, but his work has stood out enough to turn him into a surprise performer the Bills can trust, and that matters even more when the schedule starts tightening and every protection call carries more weight. Bills Fans Can Ignore These Raiders Names Heading Into Sunday
The Bills attention heading into Sunday can stay trained on the bigger-name threats, because a few Raiders storylines have not translated into much on-field impact so far. Las Vegas has cycled through options at running back, receiver and in the secondary, but the kind of production that would normally force a defense to adjust has been hard to find from Ashton Jeanty, Jalen Nailor, Darien Porter and Tonka Hemingway.
Jeantys season has been slowed by injuries, Nailor has not yet made much of a dent after signing on in free agency, and Porter has had his share of growing pains defensively. Hemingway, meanwhile, has yet to generate the disruption up front that would make him a clear concern for Buffalos offense, which leaves Sunday looking more like a matchup where the Bills can focus on the Raiders more established pieces and less on these four names breaking the game open.
