Bills fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about DJ Moore, but Week 1 may not be the night he blows up.
When Buffalo takes on Houston in less than 24 hours, Moore is the player drawing the spotlight after the Bills sent a 2nd round pick to the Chicago Bears to land him. The expectation is obvious: Buffalo wants him to step in as a major weapon right away, and fans are hoping he starts looking like the version of himself from his Carolina days rather than the quieter stretch he had in Chicago.
There’s a real logic to that optimism. Moore is walking into a setup plenty of receivers would love, with Josh Allen throwing him the ball and Joe Brady back in the picture after their time together in Carolina, where Moore posted back-to-back 1,100+ yard seasons. On paper, that pairing has all the makings of one of the league’s best this year.
But Week 1 brings a different kind of test, and Houston’s secondary is no soft landing. Seth Walder of ESPN is expecting the matchup to tilt hard in the Texans’ favor, and his forecast is the kind Bills fans won’t enjoy hearing.

That’s the heart of the problem for Buffalo. Derek Stingley Jr. is one of the league’s top corners, and if Moore spends much of the afternoon seeing him across from him, the Bills may not get the instant impact they’re expecting from their biggest offseason addition.
Maybe Moore breaks loose for one meaningful play. But if Stingley keeps him from finding clean separation, Buffalo could be stuck fighting for every inch through the air. That’s the last thing the Bills need after seeing their receivers struggle to get open last season.
