Buffalo Bills fans have made their feelings clear: if 2026 goes sideways, Brandon Beane is the name they believe will be carrying the heaviest load.
In a Buffalo Rumblings poll asking readers who is under the most pressure heading into the 2026 season, the Bills’ president of football operations/general manager finished first with 46% of the vote. Joe Brady came in second at 29%, Josh Allen was third at 21%, and first-time NFL defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard landed last at 4%.
Beane looks like the obvious target because he now holds so much of the organization’s direction in his hands. With team co-owner Terry Pegula having moved on from Sean McDermott, the situation has shifted, but not exactly softened.
Beane has survived that transition, picked up a promotion, and now has a roster full of recent draft picks - some from one or two classes ago - that need to start producing. If they don’t, the conversation could turn quickly toward bigger changes, including the possibility of new voices in the scouting department.
That’s what makes Beane the safest answer and the harshest one at the same time. He’s the one with the most control over the on-field product, and in a business like the NFL, control comes with consequences.
Brady’s spot in second is interesting for a different reason. He’s a first-time head coach, which usually buys at least a little patience.
But this wasn’t framed as a full reset. His promotion came with some controversy because it felt less like a sweeping new era and more like a reshuffling of chairs on a certain ill-fated ship.
Still, Buffalo already knows what Brady brings from his time as offensive coordinator, and now the question is whether he can deliver the things that were out of reach before. That makes the pressure real, even if it looks different from what Beane is facing.
Allen finishing third may surprise some people, but the burden on him is impossible to ignore. Time is part of it.
So is the fact that he remains the face of the franchise and, for many, the best quarterback Buffalo has ever had and maybe the best player overall. He has carried the hopes of Bills Mafia for years now, and he has done nearly everything except get the Bills to an AFC Championship win and Super Bowl berth, not to mention a Super Bowl win and Super Bowl MVP.
Now he’ll be doing it with Brady calling the shots.
Leonhard, meanwhile, drew the smallest share of the vote, and there’s a reason for that. He’s brand new to the job, and his defense will be operating on a hybrid basis because much of the roster still comes from the McDermott era.
That means the full shape of Leonhard’s preferred system may not show up right away. It also leaves open the possibility that some of those familiar pieces could actually thrive under him.
Even so, the spotlight will be intense, because McDermott’s defensive shortcomings were a major part of why he was let go, and his defense too often came up short in the playoffs.
The poll wasn’t all pressure talk, though. Buffalo Rumblings also asked fans how confident they are in the Bills’ direction, and the answer was as familiar as it was upbeat: 85% said they’re confident. The changes have clearly stirred optimism, with Brady set to run the offense and Leonhard expected to bring a more aggressive tone on defense.
For Bills fans, that leaves the same familiar ending in place. Hope is high.
Expectations are high. Now the Bills have to win it all.
