Bills Face Real Lineup Questions Before Chargers Showdown

Injuries could significantly impact the formidable Bills-Chargers showdown, altering lineups and strategies for both teams.

The Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers head into Sunday’s Week 3 meeting at Highmark Stadium carrying more than just an AFL-roots rivalry. Both teams are dealing with roster issues, and the injury report on Thursday gave a clearer picture of who might actually be available when the ball kicks off.

For Buffalo, the biggest questions sit at wide receiver. Keon Coleman has now missed two straight practices after popping up on the report Wednesday, and the issue appears to be an ankle injury he picked up against the Detroit Lions in Week 2.

DJ Moore also went from limited on Wednesday to a DNP on Thursday, and the injury is believed to be an AC joint shoulder sprain. He still has a chance to play in Week 3, but he is unlikely to be fully healed by Sunday.

That leaves Buffalo potentially thin at a spot where it could already be short-handed. If Coleman and Moore are both out, the Bills would be looking at practice-squad help, with Greg Dortch, Stephen Gosnell, Ja’Mori Maclin, and Trent Sherfield Sr. all options.

Dortch has one call-up left during the regular season before Buffalo would need to sign him to the 53-man roster, and once he’s used up, he can’t be released and then brought back to the practice squad with a fresh set of call-ups until the playoffs. Sherfield offers the most game experience of the group, while Gosnell and Maclin would be the more untested routes.

There was at least some encouraging news for Buffalo on Thursday. Ed Oliver returned to limited work after sitting out Wednesday with a hip issue, and Ty Johnson is likely to be back in Week 3, which could again squeeze Frank Gore Jr.’s chances to see the field.

Gore also has one remaining practice-squad call-up. T.J.

Sanders, meanwhile, has now missed two straight practices because of an illness, and Jordan Hancock was downgraded to DNP after being limited Wednesday.

The Bills’ full practice group included Joe Andreessen, Terrel Bernard, Bradley Chubb, and Ty Johnson.

The Chargers’ report is crowded in a different way. They listed 14 players on the injury report this week, and that’s before factoring in players already on injured reserve, including tight end David Njoku. It’s not the kind of setup a team wants when it’s trying to earn its first win on the road against a 2-0 opponent.

Los Angeles had several players held out on Thursday, including Kayode Awosika, Charlie Kolar, Elijah Molden, Trey Pipkins III, Rodney Shelley, Brenen Thompson, and Dalvin Tomlinson. Kolar, who recently had forearm surgery, is likely to be unavailable in Week 3 despite avoiding an IR designation. Tuli Tuipulotu was the lone Charger listed as limited.

The good news for Los Angeles came with the veterans and the offensive line. Derwin James Jr. and Khalil Mack both moved from limited to full practice after scheduled rest days, and both Ladd McConkey and Rashawn Slater also practiced fully.

Cole Strange joined them in full participation, which should help the Chargers sort through their options for Sunday. Deane Leonhard was also listed as a full participant.

Bills Rookie Skyler Bell Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Matter

With D.J. Moore and Keon Coleman both dealing with injuries heading into Week 3 against the Chargers, a door has opened for Skyler Bell that did not exist when the season began. The fourth-round pick was a healthy scratch for Buffalos first two games, but the Bills now appear likely to have him active, giving the rookie his first real chance to get onto the field and show why the team spent a draft pick on him.

Bells opportunity comes at a time when Buffalo needs answers at receiver, and it puts a spotlight on what he can offer beyond just filling a uniform spot. The Bills have spent two weeks without seeing him in game action, so this could become more than a routine activation if he can carve out a role while the receiver group is thin. [Read more 🡒]

Bills May Be Watching A Year Two Breakout Up Front

Deone Walker has wasted little time making his presence felt through the first two weeks of the 2026 season, giving Buffalo another interior defender who can change a game in a hurry. The second-year defensive tackle has already logged a sack, nine quarterback pressures, four tackles and three batted passes, a disruptive start that stands out even for a Bills front trying to build consistency up front.

Joe Brady has noticed the jump, praising Walkers progress and the way he fits into the defensive scheme after what was already an encouraging rookie year. A fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Walker earned All-Rookie honors last season, and now he looks like a player the Bills may be counting on for more than just depth as the year unfolds. Bills Receiver Move Suddenly Matters More Than Fans Realized

The Bills made a quiet but meaningful roster tweak by signing Greg Dortch to the 53-man roster after elevating him from the practice squad. On the surface, it is the kind of move that can get buried in the shuffle of a long season, but it comes at a time when Buffalo is dealing with uncertainty at receiver and trying to keep its passing game stocked for the next stretch.

Keon Coleman and DJ Moore are both questionable for the upcoming game because of injuries, which gives Dortch a chance to matter sooner rather than later. The Bills also placed defensive back Jordan Hancock on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, so this is a week where the roster has already been forced to absorb some hits and adjust on the fly.
