Bills Early-Game Approach Is Putting Joe Brady Under Pressure

Joe Brady's strategic decisions with the Buffalo Bills face scrutiny as the team grapples with early-game struggles despite a promising start to the season.

Joe Brady’s first season running the Buffalo Bills has started with a clear idea attached to it: win the toss, take the ball, and try to seize the game right away.

That plan sounded aggressive from the jump, and it still does. But four games into the season, the results haven’t matched the intent.

The Bills are 3-1, which is the kind of record that gets attention no matter how shaky the path has been. They’ve also spent much of the early season sorting through issues on both sides of the ball, with Jim Leonhard’s defense still trying to settle in and the offense now dealing with its own problems after back-to-back games against the Chargers and the Patriots.

The biggest wrinkle in Brady’s approach came to light in ESPN’s Week 5 intel from Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler. Graziano explained that Brady told the offense before the season opener that if Buffalo won the coin toss, it would take the ball first rather than defer like most teams do, and like the Bills generally did under Sean McDermott.

Graziano also laid out the numbers behind it: " Is it working? Sort of: The Bills are 3-1, but they've scored points on only one of their four opening drives this year, and they've allowed points on their opponents' opening drive of the second half in three of the four games."

That opening-drive issue has become impossible to ignore. Buffalo has scored the first points in only two of its four games, and the last two outings both started with the Bills falling behind early against the Chargers and Patriots. Graziano noted that the only game in which Buffalo turned its first possession into points was the Week 2 matchup with the Lions.

There is a built-in limitation here, of course. If the other team wins the toss and defers, Buffalo doesn’t get to choose. But when the Bills do have the option, Brady’s preference has been to start with the ball - and the early returns suggest it hasn’t changed the script much.

That’s the tension for Buffalo right now. The approach is meant to set a tone, but the sample size says the Bills have mostly been living on the edge anyway. Aside from the Lions game, every contest has been tight deep into the fourth quarter, and the slow starts have only added more pressure on Josh Allen and the offense to answer quickly when the defense doesn’t get the job done first.

Bills Face A New Concern With D.J. Moore Before Rams Game

D.J. Moores first season with the Bills has already taken an uneasy turn. Acquired from the Bears in the offseason, the receiver has been dealing with a shoulder injury since Week 4 against the Patriots, and Buffalo got another reminder of his status Thursday when he was not on the practice field.

Moore left that Patriots game in the first half and did not return, and the injury has limited his production since. With the Rams coming up, Buffalo has a new concern surrounding a player it brought in to give the passing game another layer, and his availability is suddenly a storyline worth watching closely. Josh Allen Just Shut Down One Patriots-Bills Storyline

Josh Allens legs became a talking point after Buffalos win over New England, but the quarterback tried to tamp that down as the Bills turned their attention to the Rams in Week 5. Allen was efficient through the air, going 23 of 33 for 253 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and he also found the end zone once on the ground despite logging only five carries for four yards.

The speculation picked up after he took a low hit to his left knee in the Week 3 win over the Chargers, leading some to wonder whether it had changed the way he ran against the Patriots. Allen pushed back on that idea, keeping the focus on moving forward as Buffalo keeps its streak of regular-season starts intact, with the veteran quarterback not having missed one since 2018. Josh Allen And Several Bills Could Rewrite History Against The Rams

A quiet little milestone watch has emerged around Buffalo as the Bills head toward a matchup with the Rams, with several familiar names sitting on the edge of some notable career markers. Josh Allen keeps adding to his place in the NFL rushing touchdown hierarchy, Dawson Knox is inching closer to a more prominent spot on Buffalos receiving lists, and Greg Rousseau is steadily climbing the teams sack leaderboard as the season moves along.

James Cook is also in range of a career rushing mark that would underline how quickly he has become part of the offenses weekly identity. For a Bills team that has leaned on its stars in a variety of ways, the possibility of multiple players rewriting sections of the record book in the same stretch adds a little extra weight to a game that already has plenty of attention on it.
