The Buffalo Bills are only two days from kicking off Week 1 in Houston, and there’s plenty of reason to think this opener could tell us a lot about where this team is headed. Buffalo is still chasing its first win in Houston since 2006, and the Texans have had the Bills’ number recently, winning back-to-back meetings over the last two seasons.
But this version of the Bills looks and feels different. There’s a new head coach in Joe Brady, new coordinators, and fresh faces on both sides of the ball. The biggest shift may be on defense, where Jim Leonhard now has the keys after what the Bills viewed as a home run hire this offseason.
That side of the ball has been reshaped with help from both free agency and the NFL Draft, and the change in structure matters too. Buffalo is moving from a 4-2-5 look to a 3-4 scheme, a move that should inject more life into a unit that had started to feel stale.
The good news for Buffalo is that this isn’t a blank slate. The roster already had impact players in place, and the new system should give them a chance to level up. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano offered some useful intel heading into the weekend, and Fowler zeroed in on Deone Walker as a player the Bills are clearly betting on.
“The Bills have big plans for second-year nose tackle Deone Walker, who could become a young leader for a defensive front that needs it.” said Fowler.
That’s a notable vote of confidence for a player who already turned heads as a rookie. Walker was a fourth-round pick last season, but he performed like much more than that, especially with the way he pushed the interior and held up against the run. He also finished with 4 pass deflections and picked off a pass in the playoffs against the Denver Broncos.
Now he’s got a year under his belt and enters a defense that should ask for even more aggression. That combination makes Walker one of the more intriguing names on the roster, and the kind of player who could take a real leap in 2026.
At minimum, he looks like a strong Pro Bowl candidate. If everything clicks and he stays healthy, there’s even a path to All-Pro level play.
For Bills fans, Fowler’s report only adds to the buzz around what Buffalo might have in Walker. If he becomes a leader in his second season, it would be another major win for a team that found him on the third day of the NFL Draft and may have landed a centerpiece for its new-look defense.

For Buffalo, the bigger takeaway is familiar: Josh Allen still sits comfortably at the top of the divisions quarterback pecking order. Maye is still trying to find steadier footing and prove he can consistently move the Patriots forward, but this debut only underscored how much ground New England still has to make up before it can seriously threaten the Bills in the AFC East. Bills Punt Return Battle Finally Has A Week 1 Front-Runner
The Bills have at least put a temporary pin in one of their quieter training camp competitions, naming Dee Alford as their primary punt returner on the first unofficial depth chart for the season opener against the Houston Texans. It is only a starting point, of course, but it gives Buffalo a clearer picture heading into Week 1 and puts Alford in position to handle a role that can swing field position in a hurry.
Ray Davis and Khalil Shakir are next in line on the depth chart, giving the Bills a couple of familiar options behind Alford as they sort out special teams roles for the opener. Buffalo also has veteran return specialist Greg Dortch on the practice squad, and his presence gives the team another possible answer if the need arises as the roster gets finalized for game day. Josh Allen Faces A Week 1 Problem Bills Fans Know Too Well
Josh Allens track record in Houston is one of those quirks Bills fans know by heart, and it does not exactly inspire comfort heading into another matchup with the Texans. Across four road starts against Houston, including the postseason, Allen has had a hard time finding rhythm, with the Texans consistently closing down the pocket and making life difficult for Buffalos offense.
Houstons pass rush has been a major reason why, with All-Pro edge players Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter helping turn Allens mobility into less of a weapon than usual.
