The Bills’ defense has three names worth watching when Detroit comes to Highmark Stadium on Thursday night.
Buffalo opens Week 2 at home against the Lions in a Thursday Night Football matchup, and while the scheme and the coaching will matter, the game could swing on a few individual defenders stepping into the spotlight.
Greg Rousseau is the first one. It was Rousseau, not Bradley Chubb, who drove Buffalo’s pass rush against the Houston Texans in Week 1, and he finished the job with a game-sealing strip sack in the final seconds.
The Bills did land a few splash plays from Rousseau and others, but the pressure wasn’t steady enough throughout the afternoon. That matters here, because Detroit quarterback Jared Goff should benefit if Buffalo’s secondary is left hanging again.
Terrel Bernard is another key piece. He is expected to lead the defense on Thursday even though he has been dealing with a calf injury on the injury reports this week.
Buffalo will not ask Bernard to handle Jahmyr Gibbs alone, but he’ll have a major say in getting the defense lined up properly and helping the unit deal with the Lions running back. On top of that, the Bills will need Bernard to create a few of those individual moments that tilt a game.
Then there’s Dee Alford. Buffalo gave up too many easy looks over the middle against the Texans, and that problem gets tougher with Amon-Ra St.
Brown waiting in the slot. Alford’s assignment is a difficult one, and it could be one of the most important matchups on the field for the Bills defense.
