Bills Collapse Sparked A Bigger Question About Who They Really Are

With a crucial interception and a historic win despite numerous turnovers, C.J. Gardner-Johnson confidently declares the Buffalo Bills as contenders for a championship run.

The Bills made a mess of Sunday, but C.J. Gardner-Johnson cleaned up the biggest mistake at the perfect time.

Buffalo had already given the ball away five times when the Chargers moved to the Bills’ 23-yard line with a chance to stretch the lead to two scores. On third-and-5, Justin Herbert tried to fit a throw toward Marques Valdez-Scantling near the end zone, and Gardner-Johnson broke on it for the interception, then took off 41 yards to near midfield.

“You go fishing? What's that word you use to catch fish?

What's the word?" he asked reporters in the locker room after the win.

"Bait. Great bait.

That's a great fishing play."

That was the kind of moment Gardner-Johnson has built his reputation on. The veteran safety has six-interception seasons on his résumé twice, including last season with the Philadelphia Eagles during their championship run.

“They'd been giving us opportunities all day,” he added. “And I told my DB, I told my corners, and nickels, go press and I'm there over the top no matter where you at and I'm going to come get you.”

Buffalo still left plays on the table. Maxwell Hairston had a first-quarter interception slip through his hands, and Gardner-Johnson had another takeaway wiped out by a Christian Benford holding penalty.

Herbert, meanwhile, had already been struggling on deep throws this season, entering the game with just 1 of 12 completions on passes of 20 or more yards downfield and three interceptions. Gardner-Johnson said the Chargers quarterback kept trusting his arm.

“He's a good quarterback," but you know, " Gardner-Johnson noted about Herbert. "He trusted his arm.

I think he get everything in there, which is not bad for a quarterback like him on his caliber. So, I feel like I had to capitalize on the on the tight throws, and I think I capitalized today on a good one."

Even with all the chaos, the result carried a strange bit of history. ESPN reported that Buffalo had not won a game with such an ugly turnover margin since 1997, when it beat the Indianapolis Colts. Jim Harbaugh was the Colts’ starting quarterback that day, and now he was on the other sideline in Los Angeles.

Gardner-Johnson received a game ball from head coach Joe Brady after the win, and he made his view of the group plain.

“I feel like we a championship team.”

Josh Allen's Knee Suddenly Looms Over Bills Patriots Week

Josh Allens knee has become the latest Bills storyline heading into a division matchup with the Patriots, but there does not appear to be much panic in Buffalo. Offensive coordinator Joe Brady said he is not concerned about the injury Allen picked up in Week 3, and the quarterback is trending toward being available when the Bills line up in Week 4.

Allen was seen limping after the game, which naturally set off some unease given how much Buffalos offense runs through him. The next few practice reports will be the real indicator here, and those updates should offer a better read on whether this is just a brief scare or something the Bills need to monitor more closely through the week. Josh Allen Injury Worry Just Put Bills Fans On Edge

Bills fans had a brief scare after Josh Allens name came up in the aftermath of the latest game, but the conversation around the quarterback quickly shifted to reassurance from the team. Head coach Joe Brady addressed the concern directly, pushing back on the idea that there is a major issue and stressing the Bills focus as they try to stay steady through the week.

Allens availability always looms large in Buffalo, where everything on offense flows through him, and even a small hint of trouble tends to draw attention fast. The Bills are still in the middle of managing their current stretch, and with Brady emphasizing resilience, the bigger question now is whether this turns out to be nothing more than a momentary worry or the kind of storyline that lingers until the next update. Patriots Injuries Could Change What Bills Face In Week 4

The Bills are getting a familiar kind of mid-September wrinkle from New England, where the Patriots are piecing together their Week 4 preparation with a crowded injury report. Several starters were absent from practice, including important bodies in the secondary and along the offensive line, and a few players showed up on the report for the first time this season. For Buffalo, it is the sort of development that can alter a game plan before the teams even take the field.

Offensive line shuffling has become a bigger concern with recent injuries to starting guards, forcing backup players into more prominent roles. The Bills will be watching those changes closely, because even a short-handed Patriots front can still affect how Buffalo attacks the matchup. For now, the biggest question is not just who New England will have available, but how much of the Week 4 game plan gets reshaped before kickoff. [Read more 🡒]
