The Buffalo Bills are turning every home game at Highmark Stadium into a two-anthem affair this season, with “O Canada” set to play before each game alongside the Star-Spangled Banner.
The club announced the plan Wednesday, and the opener is already lined up for Sept. 17 against Detroit. Toronto’s Barenaked Ladies will perform the Canadian anthem, followed by Auliʻi Cravalho, the voice of Moana, on the national anthem. OneRepublic is scheduled for halftime that night, which will also be the first regular-season kickoff in the $2.1 billion stadium.
It’s a notable move for a franchise that has long drawn plenty of support from north of the border. Canadian season-ticket holders reportedly make up about 10 to 15 percent of the base, and Southern Ontario is only about a two-hour drive from Orchard Park.
The Bills also have some built-in cross-border history: the Sabres have played both anthems since 1970, Terry Pegula owns both teams, and the Bills staged Toronto home games from 2008 to 2013. Minority owners also include former Raptors and Toronto FC names.
The timing, though, gives the announcement a sharper edge. Trump signed new import bans on Canadian goods Tuesday, and the club made clear the anthem addition is meant as a nod to fans rather than a political statement.
The Bills are arriving at this moment with a stadium full of new details, including the 20-foot broken table built into the concrete. Josh Allen will open on the road at Houston before returning to christen the building against the Lions. The official graphic has only identified the Detroit night so far, but Front Office Sports reported that the plan is for “O Canada” to be played before every home game.
Either way, Orchard Park is about to test a new kind of ritual. The pregame show now starts with two flags, and the Bills are betting their crowd can sing both.
