The Brooklyn Nets have spent the last 15 years living through plenty of roster turbulence, but on two notable occasions they came out ahead in transactions that ended up landing on Bleacher Report’s list of the biggest “bag fumbles” of the past 15 seasons.
Late in August, Bleacher Report’s Bryan Toporek ranked the ten players who left the most money on the table, and Brooklyn showed up twice - including at No. 1.
The biggest name tied to the Nets was James Harden. After Brooklyn brought in Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Harden was traded to the team and helped form one of the deadliest offensive trios of all time. The run never turned into a championship, and the group was surrounded by missed time and growing drama.
Harden, coming off a recent MVP, was offered a three-year, $161 million extension by Brooklyn. He passed on it, hoping to make more later.
Instead, the Nets sent him to the Philadelphia 76ers months later, and he wound up signing a two-year, $68.6 million deal. That was far below what he had been eligible for.
His relationship with Philadelphia’s front office soon fell apart, too.
Even with all that, Harden remains one of the most successful NBA players in league history when it comes to on-court earnings, but he never got near the Brooklyn number and has since turned into something of a journeyman late in his career.
Brooklyn’s other appearance on the list came through Donatas Motiejūnas, who signed a four-year, $37 million offer sheet with the Nets in 2016. Motiejūnas had been one of the NBA’s early stretch bigs and had become a contributor for the Houston Rockets in the mid-2010s.
Houston matched Brooklyn’s offer, but because of contractual stipulations, the Rockets were only required to pay $31 million of the original deal. That led to a dispute, and Motiejūnas did not show up for training camp.
The two sides eventually reached common ground on a four-year, $35 million deal later that offseason, but the situation kept dragging on. From there, he played less than half of the NBA season and was out of the league. He later found a role overseas and most recently played for the Shanghai Sharks.
In both cases, Brooklyn ended up on the right side of the transaction.
