Syracuse University has decided to part ways with head coach Adrian Autry after three seasons, marking a significant shift for the Orange. During his tenure, Autry led the team to a 49-48 record but never managed to secure an NCAA Tournament appearance.
Autry, who took over the reins in March 2023, was chosen to succeed the legendary Jim Boeheim following his retirement. A former player under Boeheim in the early '90s, Autry also served on his mentor's coaching staff for 12 years before stepping into the head coach role.
Reflecting on his time at Syracuse, Autry expressed gratitude, saying, "It has been an honor to coach at my alma mater. I want to thank Chancellor Kent Syverud, Athletic Director John Wildhack, Jim Boeheim, my team, and my staff for their support."
As Syracuse looks to the future, several names have emerged as potential candidates to fill the coaching vacancy. Among them are Josh Schertz, Bryan Hodgson, Luke Murray, Joe Gallo, Mike Hopkins, and Gerry McNamara, according to sources.
Mike Hopkins, a notable contender, was a longtime assistant under Boeheim before moving on to lead Washington. His accolades include two Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards and a regular-season conference title with the Huskies in the 2018-19 season.
Gerry McNamara, another familiar face for Syracuse fans, has made a name for himself by guiding Siena to a MAAC championship in just his second year as head coach. McNamara, who shone as a player for Syracuse from 2002-06, also spent 15 years on the Orange's coaching staff, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the program.
As the search for a new head coach intensifies, the Orange are poised for a new chapter, one that fans hope will bring renewed success and a return to the NCAA Tournament spotlight.
