The Brooklyn Nets are parting ways with guard Cam Thomas, waiving the 24-year-old scorer as the team reshapes its roster heading into the back half of the season.
Thomas, who’s earning about $6 million this year, will become an unrestricted free agent this summer if he clears waivers. That opens the door for a potential pickup by a contender looking to bolster its backcourt with some instant offense.
And make no mistake-scoring is Thomas’ calling card. “Super excited, ready to actually help and contribute to another team,” he said in a recent interview. “My next team is getting elite scoring, good playmaking, and a good combo guard.”
That’s not just talk. In 24 appearances for Brooklyn this season, including eight starts, Thomas averaged 15.6 points per game.
He’s the kind of player who can heat up in a hurry-capable of swinging momentum with a few quick buckets. While his rebounding and assist numbers (1.8 and 3.1 per game, respectively) aren’t eye-popping, they show flashes of versatility that could be unlocked in the right system.
Drafted 27th overall out of LSU in 2021, Thomas has always had a scorer’s mentality. Brooklyn gave him opportunities in bursts, but consistency in role and minutes was often elusive. Even so, he made the most of his time on the floor, showcasing a smooth shooting stroke and the ability to create his own shot-skills that are always in demand, especially come playoff time.
As the Nets look ahead, this move signals a shift toward flexibility and perhaps a longer-term retool. For Thomas, it’s a chance to reset-and potentially make a real impact elsewhere.
Keep an eye on teams in need of bench scoring or a spark plug off the bench. He won’t be on the market for long.
