Michael Porter Jr.’s future in Brooklyn is starting to look less certain by the day.
The Nets still haven’t reached an extension with Porter Jr. after more than three months of talks, and the price tag hanging over the deal is steep. NBA insider Sean Deveney reported that Porter is looking for about $40 million per year, which matches what he’s scheduled to make next season. That comes after a career year in which he averaged 24.2 points with a 30% usage rate and shot 36.3% on 9.3 three-point attempts per game.
Brooklyn does have a route to keep him, at least on paper. The team can use its remaining $4.5 million in cap space to renegotiate and extend him. But it hasn’t taken that step, and ClutchPoints’ Erik Slater believes that points toward a trade eventually ending Porter’s run with the team.
That’s where Orlando enters the picture.
Yossi Gozlan floated the Magic as a possible landing spot, pointing to the club’s cap problems in the seasons ahead and the possibility of a reunion between Moritz Wagner and his brother, Franz Wagner. On the “Third Apron Podcast,” Gozlan said, "Very strong chance they're going to have to do something to break up the core a little bit," Gozlan said on the "Third Apron Podcast.""I don't know how that's going to look like, but if they decide to break up Paolo (Bancher) and Franz, I think a Franz for Porter Jr. plus picks package makes a lot of sense."
Brooklyn has the kind of draft stash that could make that sort of deal work. The Nets still control plenty of first- and second-round picks, and they were in the mix for Jaylen Brown before backing off and holding onto those assets.
The Magic, meanwhile, have already spent heavily to bring in Desmond Bane, sending out four first-round picks in that deal. Bane is set to make $40 million in the 2027-28 season, joining Wagner and Banchero among Orlando’s top earners.
There’s more financial pressure coming, too. Anthony Black and Tristan Da Silva are both heading toward restricted free agency in consecutive offseasons, which only tightens the squeeze on Orlando’s long-term roster plans.
If the Magic are eventually forced to choose between Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, they may need to replenish the draft capital they lost in the Bane trade. Brooklyn could be the team that gives them that path.
From a basketball standpoint, the fit isn’t perfectly clean. The Wagner brothers reunion would make for an easy storyline, but Franz Wagner’s game overlaps with what the Nets already have.
He likes to operate with the ball, attack downhill in pick-and-roll action, and create space with stepback jumpers. Brooklyn, though, has added Julius Randle and rookie Mikel Brown Jr., two more players who also want touches.
