Nets Fans Will Be Watching One Thing Closely In Mikel Brown's Debut

As Mikel Brown Jr. prepares for his NBA debut with the Brooklyn Nets, he embraces a strategic bench role aimed at honing his game and ensuring long-term success.

As the Brooklyn Nets get ready for Wednesday’s season opener against the Charlotte Hornets, Mikel Brown Jr. is on the brink of his first NBA minutes. The No. 6 overall pick is expected to start his career coming off the bench while he gets fully healthy and adjusts to the pace of the league.

Brooklyn is likely to open the season with free agent signing Keon Ellis in the starting shooting guard spot, which would keep Brown in a reserve role early on. Head coach Jordi Fernández has already indicated the plan is to build Brown back toward starter-level minutes over time.

Brown isn’t rattled by any of that. When he spoke to reporters on Oct. 16, he made it clear the role doesn’t change how he approaches the game.

"If I come off the bench or I start, it’s still going to be me regardless," Brown said. "I don’t look at that stuff.

If I start, I start. If I come off the bench, I come off the bench.

Just continue to do what I do."

Even in a small preseason sample, Brown gave Brooklyn plenty to like. He showed the shot-making and downhill scoring that made him such an intriguing prospect in the first place, then backed it up with activity on the defensive end.

Against the Miami Heat’s preseason squad, Brown put up 15 points with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 18 minutes. He got off to a quick start after checking in, burying a wing 3-pointer on his first shot attempt.

He also made his presence felt as a defender, reading the floor well off the ball and coming away with two steals that turned into easy buckets the other way.

Fernández came away encouraged by what he saw from the rookie.

"[I liked] his pace and how he moves... He looked great.

And it's just the first few minutes. He's gonna continue to get better and build from there," Fernández said.

"I love his communication, how engaged he was with his teammates."

Brown’s early fit with the team has also stood out to teammates, and several players have already expressed confidence that he can have a big year.

The backcourt picture gets even more interesting with second-year guard Egor Dëmin, who has looked like he’s taken a step heading into the season. If Brown is not in the starting five right away, Dëmin will carry more of the playmaking and initiation load.

Still, Brooklyn appears to be looking at a pairing with real upside. Brown and Dëmin both bring scoring from all three levels, and Brown adds another layer with his defensive impact. There’s also room for both to keep developing as passers and complete guards.

Brown’s NBA debut comes Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at home against Charlotte.

Nets Fans Will Be Watching One Thing In Mikel Brown Jr's Debut

The Nets are opening the 2026-27 season with a close eye on rookie point guard Mikel Brown Jr., whose debut is arriving with a built-in layer of caution. Brown has been working his way back from an ankle injury, and Brooklyn is expected to ease him into the rotation while he continues to rebuild his conditioning and settle into the pace of the NBA.

Jordi Fernndez has made it clear the plan is to take a measured approach with Browns early minutes, prioritizing health and long-term development over immediate load. For Nets fans, the biggest thing to track wont just be how Brown looks with the ball, but how quickly the team can let him grow into a larger role without rushing the process. [Read more 🡒]

Nets Fans Are Still Waiting For Their Rookie Backcourt Look

The early months of the Nets season have already put a temporary pause on one of the rosters most intriguing ideas. Mikel Brown Jr. is beginning the year off the bench, and Egor Demin will open games next to veteran guard Keon Ellis, even though Brown and Demin flashed real chemistry together in Summer League and during open runs.

For now, Brooklyn is still waiting to see that rookie backcourt take shape in regular-season action. Browns role is being managed as he comes back from an ankle issue, which has limited his minutes, and the bigger picture remains the same: the Nets want those two young guards to grow into a pairing that can share the floor more naturally as the season goes on. Egor Demin Faces One Big Test In Nets Sophomore Year

Egor Demin has spent the offseason and preseason looking like a different version of himself, at least physically, and the early signs have been encouraging for Brooklyn. The Nets guard has added noticeable strength, and both he and coach Jordi Fernandez have pointed to a more confident approach when he gets downhill and tries to get into the paint.

The real examination comes now, once the games start counting and defenders are set to meet him at the rim every night. Brooklyn wants Demin to keep building on that aggression, but the next step is learning how to turn those drives into efficient offense against bigger, stronger resistance, which is where his early progress will either stick or get exposed.
