The Brooklyn Nets still have a little room to work with in free agency, and one name that fits the conversation is Russell Westbrook.
Brooklyn appears ready to lean on Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. to run the offense, while Mikel Brown Jr. and Egor Dëmin are allowed to grow into bigger roles behind them. That setup leaves the door open for another veteran, even if the team is not actively hunting for one right now.
Westbrook makes sense on a few levels. Brown grew up rooting for him, and the rookie has already shown that connection. At the NBA Rookie Photoshoot, Brown talked about being fired up to face Damian Lillard, who has also served as a mentor, and the social-media clip showed just how much those players have meant to him.
For the Nets, Westbrook would bring more than name value. He is nearing the back end of his career, but he still put up strong production last season, averaging 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds in 64 games with the Sacramento Kings. He also logged nearly 30 minutes per game, which suggests he would still want a real role, not just a seat on the bench.
Brooklyn could use that kind of edge in the backcourt. The roster is not exactly overflowing with guards, and Dëmin may eventually settle in as a small forward once he adds more size. Brown, meanwhile, may need time to adjust to major minutes at the NBA level.
That is where Westbrook’s presence could matter. A player with his background would give the Nets a daily example of intensity, accountability and the kind of work ethic that helped him win an MVP and post multiple triple-double seasons.
Brown, in particular, has some of the same athletic tools Westbrook brought early in his own career. The next step is learning to play with that same fearless, relentless approach on both ends of the floor.
There is also the business side. Westbrook still carries global name recognition, and adding him could help fill seats at Barclays Center, move merchandise and boost Brooklyn’s social reach.
For a rebuilding team, that kind of veteran can be valuable if he is willing to put the team first. If the Nets decide Westbrook is not the right fit, they could always shift their attention to the trade market and pursue a star who might benefit from a fresh start.
