Luka Dončić Faces Suspension After 16th Technical Foul
In a tense matchup against the Brooklyn Nets, Luka Dončić found himself at the center of controversy after being hit with his 16th technical foul of the season. This puts the Los Angeles Lakers star in line for an automatic one-game suspension, unless the league decides to rescind the call.
The incident unfolded in the third quarter, with just over five minutes left on the clock. After committing an offensive foul in the backcourt, Dončić was confronted by Nets small forward Ziaire Williams.
A brief shove from Dončić led to a heated exchange, prompting a review for a hostile act. The result?
Both players received technical fouls.
Lakers coach JJ Redick is optimistic about appealing the technical. Dončić himself expressed frustration, stating, “I didn’t even talk.
I just wanted to get out of there. They said I pushed, my push was exaggerated, which it obviously was not.”
Despite the drama, the Lakers managed to pull away in the fourth quarter, securing a 116-99 victory. Dončić shone brightly, racking up 41 points and 8 rebounds, marking his 15th 40-point game of the season.
According to NBA rules, a player must serve a one-game suspension after their 16th technical foul in a season. Additional suspensions follow for every two further technicals, though the count resets come playoff time.
Interestingly, Dončić was in a similar situation last week after an altercation with Orlando Magic center Goga Bitadze. However, upon review, the league decided to rescind the technical fouls for both players.
As it stands, Dončić is set to miss Monday’s game against the Washington Wizards, unless the appeal swings in his favor. The Lakers, riding high with 14 wins in their last 16 games, will be hoping for a favorable outcome to keep their momentum going.
