The Boston Red Sox were busy bees this offseason, shaking things up with over a dozen trades. Their focus?
Bolstering the infield and starting rotation. But amidst the flurry of activity, a smaller trade might have slipped under some fans' radar.
Back on December 9, the Red Sox sent infielder Vaughn Grissom packing to the Los Angeles Angels. In return, they snagged outfield prospect Isaiah Jackson.
Grissom's time in Boston was brief, just 31 games over two seasons, after being acquired from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for Chris Sale. Injuries, unfortunately, played a big part in his limited appearances.
In 2024, a groin strain during spring training sidelined Grissom until May. Just when he got back on the field, a hamstring strain sent him back to the injured list.
Now with the Angels, Grissom's journey seems to be following a familiar pattern. He was poised to make the Opening Day roster in Anaheim, especially since he’s out of minor league options and has posted a .629 OPS over 11 Cactus League games. But his debut with the Angels is now in question.
Grissom exited the Angels' March 11 spring training matchup against the Chicago White Sox with a sore hand. Leading off for LA, he reportedly injured his hand during a swing. Early reports suggest he might be day-to-day, meaning he could avoid the injured list for now.
If Grissom's injury turns out to be more serious, landing him on the IL, it would be a tough break as he looks to make his mark outside Boston and Atlanta. The 25-year-old hasn't seen big league action since 2024, and with no minor league options left, the clock is ticking for him to prove his worth.
For now, the signs are hopeful that Grissom's injury is minor. Even with a few days of rest, the Angels could still keep him on the major league roster, knowing his contract situation. But if an IL stint is necessary, it would be a frustratingly familiar start for Grissom in Anaheim.
