The Red Sox head into Monday night looking for a hard reset, and they’re getting it with some familiar faces back in the mix.
Boston opens a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park with Roman Anthony back at the top of the order and Trevor Story making his second straight start after both returned Sunday from long injury layoffs. Anthony will hit leadoff and serve as the designated hitter, while Story is back at shortstop and batting eighth against Seattle right-hander George Kirby.
The lineup around them looks different, too, because Boston had to make another move on the injury front. The Red Sox placed first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain.
Contreras has been a major part of the offense, hitting .280 with 23 home runs, 70 RBIs and a .912 OPS. In his place, Mickey Gasper was recalled from Triple-A Worcester and will start at first base and bat second.
Boston’s full lineup for the opener is Roman Anthony, Mickey Gasper, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Nick Sogard, Caleb Durbin, Jarren Duran, Trevor Story and Connor Wong.
Anthony gave the Red Sox something to build on in Sunday’s 16-1 loss to the New York Yankees. In his first major league game since May 4, the 22-year-old went 2-for-4 with a ground-rule double.
Story also came back strong after sports hernia surgery, finishing 2-for-3 with a double after missing more than three months. Interim manager Chad Tracy is hoping those two returns help steady a lineup that has been uneven for much of the season.
With Contreras out, Boston shuffled the middle of the order as well. Wilyer Abreu slides into the cleanup spot, and Ceddanne Rafaela moves up to No. 3.
The Red Sox are trying to shake off a brutal weekend in New York. They dropped three of four to the Yankees, and the last two losses were especially ugly: 9-2 and 16-1. Over those final two games, New York piled up 25 runs on 31 hits.
That slide left Boston at 74-63 and four games behind the Yankees in the chase for the American League’s top wild-card spot. Left-hander Payton Tolle gets the ball Monday and will try to stop the skid. He enters at 8-6 with a 3.09 ERA and has not lost in his last nine starts.
First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. ET on NESN.
