The Boston Red Sox are turning to a different look at the top of the order as they try to snap out of a brutal offensive slide in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees.
Interim manager Chad Tracy went with Jahmai Jones leading off and handling designated hitter duties, while Jarren Duran was left out of the starting nine against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón. Ceddanne Rafaela hits second and starts in center field, with Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin filling out the middle of the lineup.

The shakeup comes after another night where the bats went nowhere. Boston fell 1-0 in Friday’s opener, collecting just two hits against Cam Schlittler and the Yankees bullpen. The Red Sox drew five walks, but they couldn’t cash in, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and leaving 10 men on base.
That was the second straight shutout loss for Boston.
Patrick Sandoval did his part, giving up only Paul Goldschmidt’s solo homer over 5 1/3 innings, but the offense never backed him up. The pitching staff handed the lineup chances; the lineup just never delivered the swing that could change the game.
Tracy is hoping Jones can help set a different tone from the leadoff spot, and the move also gives Boston a right-handed bat with a favorable matchup against Rodón. Eli White is in the outfield in place of Duran.
Behind the plate, Adley Rutschman is back after Connor Wong started Friday’s opener. The switch-hitting catcher looms as one of the key bats in a lineup that needs far more from its middle.
Boston enters the doubleheader at 73-61, three games behind the 76-58 Yankees. With two games Saturday and another rivalry game Sunday, the Red Sox have a chance to close the gap fast.
But first, they need to put a run on the board.
