The Red Sox may have a fresh opening to get back into the Ketel Marte conversation.
Boston already poked around on the Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman last offseason, but nothing came of it. The interest sharpened after the Red Sox missed out on Alex Bregman in free agency, yet by then Arizona had pulled Marte off the trade block. He stayed put for the 2026 season, one that turned rocky enough that he even no-showed for a game at Fenway Park against Boston.
Now the offseason has arrived, and the chatter is starting again. The Red Sox have already made two separate trades to clear players off the 40-man roster, and more moves are expected. Marte is once again a name worth watching, especially after Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reported that the Diamondbacks are expected to "listen" on players this winter, including Marte.
"The Diamondbacks are definitely going to listen when it comes to trade interest in some of their players, including Ketel Marte," Gambadoro wrote. "Does not mean they will trade him but they do believe some changes will be necessary to get over the hump and they have had surface-level discussions with other teams to gauge the temperature of interest."
Marte’s season was down by his standards, but the production still stood out. In 141 games, he hit 22 home runs, drove in 76 runs and posted a .249/.316/.432 slash line. For a Red Sox lineup that could use more pop, that kind of bat would matter.
Boston’s roster picture looks different now than it did a year ago, though. The infield doesn’t have the same glaring openings.
Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin have the corners locked down, and while the middle infield isn’t fully settled, there are options already in place. The expectation right now is some combination of Trevor Story, Franklin Arias and Curtis Mead to open the season.
If Marte were acquired, he would slide into second base, which could shift Mead to designated hitter. Shortstop would then come down to Story and Arias.
There are other wrinkles, too. Marte has a no-trade clause through his 10-and-5 rights, so any deal would need his approval. He is also under contract for four more seasons, plus a 2031 player option.
Last winter’s interest never turned into a deal. This time, if Arizona really does entertain offers and Marte is willing to go to Boston, he’s a player the Red Sox should be ready to consider, right alongside Elly De La Cruz.

Red Sox Just Drew A Line On Franklin Arias Trade Talk
Franklin Arias has quickly become one of the more important names in the Red Sox system, and after a breakout minor league season in 2026, it is easy to see why his value has risen so sharply. Boston has been linked to plenty of trade chatter around the top prospect, including a reported exploration of a deal for star shortstop Elly De La Cruz, but Cincinnati was not interested in moving its young centerpiece.
For the Red Sox, the bigger takeaway is the line they appear to be drawing around Arias. The organization is expected to be careful with a player who has climbed into the upper tier of baseball's prospect rankings, and any serious consideration of moving him would likely require a major star coming back the other way. In other words, Boston is treating Arias less like a trade chip and more like the kind of talent it would take a true difference-maker to pry loose. [Read more 🡒]
Red Sox Offseason Fix Could Force A Tough Choice In The Outfield
The Red Sox are already being connected to a possible offseason swing at Randy Arozarena, a move that would be aimed at giving the lineup more punch and a little more speed heading into the 2027 season. It is the kind of fit that makes sense on paper for a club that could use help in the same areas it fell short a year earlier, especially if Boston wants to keep pace in a tougher offensive landscape.
Arozarena would not come cheap, and that is where the conversation gets interesting for the Red Sox. Adding a player with that kind of profile could force the front office to make other roster decisions to make the pieces fit, particularly in the outfield, where a major addition tends to ripple through the rest of the depth chart. If Boston is serious about pursuing him, the bigger question may be less about whether he helps and more about what else has to change to make room. [Read more 🡒]
Orioles Hold A Luis Robert Decision That Could Help Boston
The Red Sox are already weighing how to add more offense for the next stage of their push toward contention in 2027, and one name worth keeping in view is Luis Robert Jr. The former All-Star now sits with Baltimore, where his future could soon become a decision point if the Orioles pass on his 2027 option.
Roberts appeal is obvious for a Boston club looking for impact talent, even with the obvious health questions that have followed him in recent seasons. His mix of power and speed has long made him the kind of player teams monitor closely, and if Baltimore lets the situation move toward free agency, the Red Sox could have a real opening to explore.
