A couple of familiar names in Triple-A had Red Sox fans buzzing Tuesday night, but the latest update doused the promotion chatter.
Kristian Campbell and Romy González were both taken out early from Worcester’s game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, and that was enough to get the speculation machine spinning. Campbell has been on a tear, posting a .375/.447/.719 line with a 1.166 OPS over his last nine games, along with three homers, 11 RBIs, five walks and two doubles.
González has been even hotter. In his last 15 games, he’s hit .421/.477/.649 with a 1.126 OPS, plus three home runs, 17 RBIs, seven walks, four doubles and 11 runs scored.
But the early exits weren’t a sign of a big league call-up. Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reported that both players were pulled for precautionary injury reasons instead.
“Romy González (arm) and Kristian Campbell (toe) were both removed from the WooSox game due to minor soreness and precautionary reasons,” Smith wrote on X.
That doesn’t shut the door on either player getting back to Boston before the season ends. It just means this wasn’t the night.
For González, the obstacle is roster fit as much as anything else. He’s valued as a left-handed bat-masher who can move around the diamond, but the Red Sox already have a number of players covering similar ground.
Jahmai Jones has taken on the lefty-killer role, Eli White is serving as outfield depth, and the infield picture has included Nick Sogard getting regular run while Andruw Monasterio and Isiah Kiner-Falefa have filled more of the reserve lanes. Mickey Gasper has also bounced around in different spots, and he’s been the club’s hottest overall hitter.
That leaves little room to maneuver unless injuries open something up. The clearest route back for González appears to be if Monasterio really stumbles at the plate, though Monasterio has been in the majors all season and has contributed.
Campbell’s path looks even murkier. He needs a steady role, and the Red Sox just went with Nate Eaton rather than Campbell after Ceddanne Rafaela landed on the Injured List, a move that points to how Boston is thinking about playing time right now.
So for the moment, González may have the cleaner road back than Campbell. But neither is headed to Boston just yet.
