Red Sox Shake Up Roster, Hint at Unseen Pitching Strategy

Red Sox face pitching dilemma as Jacob Webb's reassignment raises concerns about Triple-A depth and bullpen readiness.

As the Boston Red Sox gear up for the regular season, the team is making crucial roster decisions. With players returning from the World Baseball Classic, the focus is on trimming the roster to the Opening Day essentials. On March 13, the Red Sox reassigned reliever Jacob Webb to the minors, narrowing the spring training group to 58, with only 26 spots available for the season opener.

Jacob Webb, a promising 26-year-old right-hander, was drafted by the Red Sox in 2021. Despite his potential, Webb's spring training performance made this decision less surprising.

Over 5.1 innings, he allowed nine runs on seven hits, struck out seven, and walked eight. It's clear he needs more time to refine his skills.

The Red Sox have bolstered their starting pitching depth over recent years, even after offloading several arms this winter. This depth means that top prospects like Connelly Early and Payton Tolle are likely to start the season in Triple-A. However, the bullpen depth is less robust, though the signing of Danny Coulombe offers some stability.

Webb's journey in Triple-A has been rocky. Promoted at the end of 2024 and 2025, his performances have been inconsistent.

In 2024, he gave up eight runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. The following year saw improvement, with eight runs on 12 hits over 11.1 innings, 10 strikeouts, and seven walks.

Notably, his WHIP improved from 3.27 to 1.68.

Webb's development is ongoing, and more time against advanced minor league competition will be crucial for him to hone his command and elevate his game. With only 15 Triple-A innings under his belt, this season offers him a valuable opportunity to grow.

Despite the bullpen's uncertainties, the Red Sox boast a formidable late-inning duo in Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman. Additionally, Kutter Crawford and Patrick Sandoval could bolster the bullpen if the rotation remains intact. Meanwhile, Alec Gamboa, Wyatt Olds, Noah Song, Tayron Guerrero, and eventually Jeremy Wu-Yelland provide potential depth from the minors, ready to step up if called upon.
