Crochet is scheduled to throw another live batting practice session during the final weekend of the regular season, Tracy said Wednesday. That comes after the left-hander completed his first live BP on Tuesday, a meaningful step in the comeback process. The Red Sox didn’t immediately provide an update after that session, but Crochet was seen playing catch at Fenway Park on Wednesday, a sign he got through the workout without any apparent issues.
For now, the timeline remains murky. Tracy confirmed that Crochet will not pitch in the regular season, though the postseason is still in play. Whether he could be ready for the wild-card series, which begins Tuesday, is still uncertain.
Crochet addressed the situation Tuesday and said he would leave the call to the team. He also made clear he believes he can contribute.
"For me to take a spot on the roster, then someone would have to lose one, and I would feel bad doing that because this team's pitched their a- off the whole season," Crochet told reporters.
If Boston does bring him back, it won’t be in a starting role. There hasn’t been enough time to build him up for length, though Tracy has recently said Crochet could still be used as an opener if the situation calls for it.
