The Boston Red Sox find themselves in a familiar spot this offseason-searching for stability at third base after the departure of Alex Bregman. And with the market thinning out, one name stands out as a logical fit: Eugenio Suárez.
Suárez may not be the long-term answer, but at this stage of the offseason, he represents the most realistic solution left on the board. A proven right-handed power bat, Suárez launched 49 homers last season, and while his defensive metrics have declined, his offensive upside is hard to ignore-especially for a team that could use a jolt of pop from the right side.
Fenway Park, with its inviting left field and quirky dimensions, has long been a haven for pull-happy sluggers. Suárez fits that mold.
His swing is built to elevate the ball to left, and his track record suggests he could thrive in Boston’s hitter-friendly environment. His career numbers at Fenway, though from a small sample size, hint at a potentially productive partnership.
The Red Sox don’t have to add another bat, but let’s be honest-it would be a smart move. Losing Bregman to the Cubs left a hole in the lineup and in the clubhouse.
And while it’s tough to stomach the idea of going from Rafael Devers to Bregman to Suárez at the hot corner, that’s the situation Boston is facing. It’s not ideal, but it’s also not without upside.
Suárez isn’t the same defender he once was, and that’s part of the equation here. But if Boston was truly prioritizing defense at third, Bregman might still be in a Red Sox uniform.
The front office has said the right things about valuing glove work-especially after moving on from Devers-but their actions this winter suggest a shift in priorities. Offense is taking center stage.
A short-term deal-one or two years-would make a lot of sense for both sides. It gives the Red Sox a bridge at third base while they assess long-term options, and it gives Suárez a chance to play in a park that suits his strengths, in a lineup that could use his thunder.
At this point in the offseason, it’s less about finding the perfect fit and more about finding the best available one. And right now, Eugenio Suárez looks like Boston’s best bet.
