The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals might not be done doing business just yet.
According to a new report, the two clubs have discussed a potential trade that would send Brendan Donovan to Boston - a move that, if completed, would mark the third significant deal between the teams in recent months. While no trade is imminent, the talks suggest the Red Sox are still actively reshaping their infield, and Donovan is clearly a player of interest.
Donovan, who just wrapped up a breakout 2025 campaign with the Cardinals, would likely slot in at second base for Boston. That’s a position the Red Sox have been evaluating closely this offseason, with other reports linking them to Arizona’s Ketel Marte as well. But Donovan’s profile brings a different kind of intrigue - a blend of contact hitting, defensive flexibility, and high baseball IQ that makes him a fit for a team looking to solidify its middle infield.
In 2025, Donovan batted .287 over 118 games, with 10 home runs, 50 RBIs, and 64 runs scored. He posted a .775 OPS and earned his first All-Star nod - a testament to his consistent production and value across the board.
He did all this despite a left groin strain that cut his season short in mid-August. The injury sidelined him for the final stretch as the Cardinals stumbled to a 78-84 finish, placing fourth in the NL Central.
What makes Donovan particularly appealing for Boston is his versatility. He’s played multiple infield and outfield positions, giving the Red Sox options depending on how the rest of their roster shakes out. That kind of flexibility is a premium asset in today’s game, especially for a team still trying to find the right mix after a transitional few seasons.
This wouldn’t be the first time these two clubs have connected this offseason. St.
Louis has already sent right-hander Sonny Gray and first baseman Willson Contreras to Boston in separate deals. And with Chaim Bloom - now the Cardinals’ president of baseball operations and formerly the Red Sox chief baseball officer - calling the shots in St.
Louis, the familiarity between front offices could make future deals more feasible.
Again, nothing is close. But the fact that Donovan’s name is in play tells us a lot about Boston’s mindset.
They’re not just kicking the tires - they’re clearly looking for players who can contribute right away and help build a more balanced, competitive roster. Donovan fits that mold.
So while this trade may not be around the corner, it’s one to keep an eye on. If it happens, it could be another key piece in Boston’s effort to turn the page and get back into contention.
