Griffin did his part to keep the night from getting away. He gave up 10 hits over six innings but limited Boston to one run, struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter. On another night, that’s the sort of line that can carry a win.
The result still left Cleveland in position to do what it wanted. After Texas lost to the Mets on Wednesday, the Guardians moved into range to clinch a postseason berth with a win over Boston on Thursday, according to MLB’s Cleveland report.
First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. ET.
There’s a catch, though, and it matters. Cleveland has four regular-season games left and owns a one-game edge over the White Sox in the AL Central, so clinching a playoff spot and clinching the division are not the same thing. A wild-card berth would get the Guardians into October, but the division title would shape their path through the bracket.
Chicago also holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Cleveland. If the teams finish tied, the Guardians can’t count on that to save them.
Manager Stephen Vogt said after the game that Cleveland still controls its destiny. The next step is simple enough: win before the White Sox can close the gap. Thursday at Fenway gives the Guardians that chance, and the final weekend will decide whether the postseason comes with an AL Central crown attached.
