The Boston Red Sox didn’t waste any time making moves this offseason. With the additions of Ranger Suárez, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras, the front office sent a clear message: they're looking to retool and stay competitive in a loaded American League.
But while the new faces have grabbed headlines, there’s another name that could make just as big an impact-Roman Anthony. The promising young outfielder missed the 2025 postseason due to an oblique injury, but he’s now on track to return.
His presence adds another layer to a lineup that’s starting to take shape with both veteran leadership and emerging talent. If Anthony can pick up where he left off, Boston’s outfield depth and offensive upside get a serious boost.
Still, not everything is trending upward as Spring Training nears. The Red Sox are monitoring a trio of players dealing with injuries: first baseman Triston Casas, infielder Romy Gonzalez, and right-hander Kutter Crawford.
Casas, a key piece of Boston’s future at the plate and in the field, is being evaluated for a potential stint on the injured list. Gonzalez, who was reported to be battling a lingering shoulder issue as of early February, has been shut down from all baseball activities, according to manager Alex Cora. That’s a setback for the 29-year-old utility man, who was expected to compete for a meaningful role this spring.
Crawford, meanwhile, isn’t dealing with a physical injury per se-but he did fall behind in his offseason prep due to a bout with the flu. It’s enough to put him in the IL conversation as well, at least in the early part of camp.
There’s still time for things to stabilize before Opening Day, but these early injury concerns are something to watch. For a team looking to bounce back and contend in a deep division, health and depth will be just as important as any offseason acquisition.
