Red Sox Get Surprising ESPN Contender Ranking

Can the Boston Red Sox overcome their recent struggles and make a significant push for the World Series in 2026?

The Boston Red Sox are gearing up for a fierce battle as they aim to reclaim their spot at the top of the baseball world. After breaking a three-year playoff drought with a wild-card spot last season, the Sox are hungry for their first American League East championship and World Series title since 2018.

In a recent ranking by ESPN's Bradford Doolittle, the Red Sox found themselves in a competitive position, nestled near the bottom of the second tier titled "Their time could be now." They came in 10th overall, trailing the New York Yankees at 6th and the Toronto Blue Jays at 9th. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed the top spot in their own elite tier.

Doolittle described Boston's current status as "increasingly tepid," noting, "The Red Sox are still pretty warm but are at their lowest level in 20 years. Last season's 89-73 record was a step up from years of mediocrity, but Boston couldn't convert that into a postseason series win. In a division packed with four of the top 11 teams, being tepid won't cut it."

A key player in Boston's quest for success is the young outfielder Roman Anthony. At just 21, Anthony is seen as a pivotal figure for the team after playing 71 games as a rookie.

Doolittle emphasized, "All signs point to Anthony being ready to make a significant impact in the American League. The Red Sox need him to double his game count, at the very least.

If Boston wants to secure a playoff spot, keeping Anthony healthy is crucial."

The Red Sox kicked off the 2026 season on a high note. Anthony was impressive, reaching base four times in their 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Garrett Crochet also shone, delivering six scoreless innings in a stellar Opening Day performance on the road.
