Red Sox Fans Stunned by Offseason Rumor That Never Came True

Red Sox fans are left wondering what could have been as offseason dreams of landing Ketel Marte and other stars slip away.

The Boston Red Sox entered the 2025-26 offseason with a clear mission: break a three-year playoff drought by bolstering their defense, pitching, and adding some much-needed power to the lineup. Red Sox Nation was buzzing with anticipation, hoping for a flurry of impactful moves.

However, the wishlist didn't quite materialize as expected. Key targets like Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, Kyle Schwarber, and Pete Alonso found homes elsewhere.

Bregman, with his brief yet memorable stint with the Sox, seemed like the perfect fit, given his strong numbers at Fenway, leadership, and defensive prowess. But as he suits up for the Cubs, Boston fans are left pondering what might have been.

One offseason rumor that had fans dreaming was a potential acquisition of Arizona Diamondbacks' second baseman, Ketel Marte. While the Sox did land Caleb Durbin, who’s shown promise, many still fantasize about Marte anchoring the infield.

Marte would have checked nearly every box on Boston's offseason agenda. Known for his reliable bat, Marte boasts a career .281/.351/.472 slash line with an .823 OPS. Entering his age-32 season, he’s shown no signs of slowing down, posting an impressive .893 OPS over 126 games in 2025, earning his second consecutive All-Star nod and a Silver Slugger Award.

Power is another aspect Marte brings to the table, something Boston sorely needed after trading Rafael Devers in June. With 28 homers in 2025 and 36 in 2024, Marte’s numbers would have topped the Red Sox charts both years.

Defensively, Marte shines as well. With three All-Star appearances and MVP votes to his name, he’s excelled at second base, a position that’s lacked consistency in Boston since Dustin Pedroia’s career-ending injury in 2017. Marte’s defensive range has been above average since 2023, highlighted by 10 defensive runs saved in 2024 and another in 2025.

The sticking point? The Diamondbacks demanded a hefty return for Marte, reportedly asking for prospects like Connelly Early, Payton Tolle, or even Marcelo Mayer. Boston, having already made significant trades, was reluctant to part with such talent and depth.

Yet, the thought of Marte in a Red Sox uniform, playing half his games at Fenway, remains an enticing "what if" scenario for fans. While Durbin and Willson Contreras are solid additions, Marte could have elevated the roster to new heights.
